ACADEMICS/ELIGIBILITY

Ø  All athletes are expected to place academic success at the top of their priority list.

Ø  All athletes are expected to do their best, turn in all assignments, and take any opportunity to make up, or raise low grades.

Ø  No pass-No play is real. If you fail a class, you are ineligible for three weeks. At the end of the three weeks you must be passing all of your classes to be reinstated to compete.

Ø  Grade checks will be conducted throughout each grading period and any athlete who has a grade average lower than a 70 or a zero on any assignment, will be required to attend tutorials.

Ø  All athletes must complete the online athletic registration packet, sign and return the handbook acknowledgement form, and complete any additional paperwork deemed necessary from the UIL.

ATTENDANCE/TARDY POLICY

Ø  Attendance is directly related to success in the classroom as well as on the athletic field or court.

Ø  In the event of an absence from school (illness, school related or personal) from the athletic period, all athletes will be required to make up the absence upon return/recovery. The designated makeup for each absence will be 250 jump ropes that must be completed in the presence of a coach and with a jump rope. This includes any missed workouts due to parent notes. Athletes with doctor’s notes will be given an assignment to complete during the period for their daily grade. **Absences the day before a game will make the athlete ineligible for the game (unless communicated prior to the absence).

Ø  In the event of illness or injury, the athlete may bring one signed and dated note from the parent per six weeks to excuse the athlete from practice for a maximum of two days. For the athlete’s well-being, after two days a doctor’s note or a note from the high school trainer is required for dismissal from workout. Points will be deducted from the athlete’s grade after two days without a note from the trainer or doctor. Our athletic trainers are available every morning and after school at the Saginaw High School field house to see our athletes for any injuries incurred while in school sports.

Ø  SHS Trainers: Rick Redden and Emily Young

817-306-0914

Ø  Notes from home and or doctor’s office need to be as specific as possible. (ex. No jumping or running- walking is permitted) Please do not ask that your athlete be excused from all practice for a minor injury as we can often modify their workout so that they do not lose a full day of workout. Our coaches are professionals and have training and knowledge in dealing with injured athletes. Please allow us the discretion.

Ø  All athletes are expected to be on the floor, in their designated spot, dressed out completely and ready to go before the bell rings. This means workout clothes on, shirts tucked in.

PARTICIPATION/GRADING POLICY

Ø  All athletes are expected to work hard every day, always giving 100%. If an athlete is not participating fully or fails to dress out completely, points will be deducted from their grade each day.

Ø  Grading is as follows: Each day will be worth 20 points.

Ø  Completely dressing out includes removing of all *jewelry, proper shoes on and laced, and keeping their shirt tails tucked in. * THIS RULE IS NOT FLEXIBLE, PARENT NOTES WILL NOT EXCUSE NEW PIERCINGS.*

Ø  Failure to suit up appropriately for an extended length of time may result in removal from the athletic period at the end of the six weeks or semester. For the 7th graders this means they may not be allowed in 8th grade athletics the following year. TO INSURE OUR ATHLETES HAVE THEIR CLOTHES EACH DAY, THE ATHLETE SHOULD NOT TAKE HOME THEIR WORKOUT CLOTHES. The coaches will wash, dry and return the clothes to the athlete’s locker each day.

Ø  If an athlete who has been absent or sitting out with a note from home fails to complete their 250 jump ropes within three weeks upon their return/recovery to work out, they will lose all 20 points for each day they have missed.

BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE/CONSEQUENCES

Ø  All athletes are expected to show respect for their coaches and teachers and display good sportsmanship at all times towards their teammates.

Ø  BULLYING AND FIGHTING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED IN/OUT OF SCHOOL. THIS INCLUDES SOCIAL MEDIA. BULLYING AND FIGHTING WILL RESULT IN CONDITIONING AND POSSIBLE REMOVAL FROM ATHLETICS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR.

Ø  All athletes are expected to adhere to policies in the campus handbook and follow all classroom rules.

Ø  Be a leader by your actions. You are seen by more people due to your participation in athletics and are representing your school, your coaches and our program.

Ø  Extra conditioning will be the type of physical discipline coaches will use for any misbehavior in athletics, classroom, and for not suiting up or improper wear of complete uniform.

Ø  Multiple detentions (lunch/morning/after school/Saturdays), placements in SAC, could result in the removal from athletics for the remainder of the year.

Ø  If an athlete is assigned to ADC they are subject to removal from athletics upon return to HMS.

Ø  EXCESSIVE absences from workout or school, tardiness to workouts or classes, parent notes, or being disrespectful to coaches may result in removal from their team and athletics.

Ø  The use of drugs and or alcohol will result in the removal from athletics.

INJURY NOTIFICATION

Ø  Sports by their nature can lead to injury. If an athlete does suffer an injury, the athlete should notify the coach immediately so that they can make a determination as to whether the athlete should seek assistance from the athletic trainer or doctor.

ATHLETIC LOCKER ROOM AREA

Ø  All athletes are issued a locker with a lock and are responsible for keeping all personal items in their locker with the door shut and locked.

Ø  Any items left out will be placed in the lost and found bucket. HMS is not responsible for any items lost or stolen when not locked up. We recommend that no valuables be brought to school.

Ø  Athletes are responsible for keeping the locker rooms in proper order and clean. Failure to do so will result in extra conditioning.

Ø  REMINDER- Lockers are not closet’s, do not overload the lockers with clothes and books that are not needed. Clean out your locker weekly.
