3. BACHELOR OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (HONOURS) [BHRM (Hons)]

INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Human Resource Management is offered to provide an excellent platform in helping students equip themselves with current knowledge and skills in managing human resources both in the private and public sectors. This program emphasizes on the importance of in depth understanding of the conventional HRM function, and also the needs of contemporary HRM practices that is characterised by active strategic alignment. Students will get the opportunity to go through a well-organized learning module that uses various high impact teaching and learning practices such as service learning, case studies, problem based learning, and industrial attachment. This programme also provide the opportunity for the students to choose a minor of their interest offered by other programmes in UUM.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The Human Resource Management programme was introduced to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Apply concepts, theories and knowledge in all functional areas of human resource management to ensure effective human resource management practices.
  2. Apply high quality skills while providing human resource services in the business context.
  3. Integrate and synthesize organizational issues and evaluate the potential human resource solutions to be applied in the context of the organization and the community at large.
  4. Identify current and future challenges and opportunities in managing human resources in the dynamic and global business scenarios.

The course discusses several important concepts and theories in industrial relations. It is about managing harmonious management-employees and union relationships towards achieving the objectives of the organization. It also seeks to expose students to various roles played by parties who are actively involved in the process of industrial relations, i.e. employers, workers (including union) and government. Aspects such as collective bargaining, industrial dispute and settlement of trade disputes will form a major part of the whole syllabus. The Malaysian law, rules and regulations will be discussed throughout the course.

Basically this course discusses conventional areas of human resource management, such as recruitment, selection, training and development, career planning, compensation administration and other contemporary issues facing the management of people in an organization. However, those functional areas will be examined from an Islamic perspective as a basis for considerations and decisions by managing their human resources management.

The purpose of this course is to educate and expose students to the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and Regulations and Factories and Machinery Act 1967 which provide guidelines and procedures for managing and handling matters pertaining to OSH in organizations/business firms. In addition, the course provides a good platform for students to enhance their knowledge and skills to comprehend OSH issues in the workplace.

BSMX 4908 / PRACTICUM
PRE-REQUISITE: / Have taken and passed 110 credit hours.

Practicum is a partial requirement for BHRM (Hons) Programme. The objectives of the practicum are: to expose BHRM students to the real world of working environments, to enhance students’ knowledge in organisational and industrial management they are interested in, and to give an opportunity to the students to apply the theories they have learnt. Each student has to do the practical training for a period of ten weeks and would be supervised by three individuals, namely a first supervisor, a visiting supervisor, and a supervisor from the organisation in which the student is attached to. The three supervisors will lead, help and advice the student on how to carry out the tasks assigned to him/her during the duration of the practicum. The same supervisors will evaluate the student’s performance.
