Create a social movement / A ‘social movement’ needs to be created to win hearts and minds. This involves leaders who are passionate about patient care creating compelling narratives that describe the link between implementing the SAFER patient flow bundle and improving patient care.
Training
Feedback sessions / Ensure appropriate staff training – to include executives, matrons, consultants, managers and ward managers attending master class for train the trainer sessions
Establish training programme for all ward-based staff, records log and certificates of attendance
Decide on percentage of staff to be trained before implementation, eg 75%

Team engagement
Use of the voluntary sector to talk to patients to find out whether they are aware of their EDD, what is happening today and tomorrow, and what they need to do
Celebrate success / Regular updates on length of stay (LoS) (eg SPC charts), record number of patients pulled before 10:00am to the base ward, compelling patient stories, use of social media
Audit tools / Develop audit tools to measure SAFER, Red2Green days, delays. This will ensure appropriate workstreams or action plans are identified
