CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL PTO MINUTES

MARCH 4, 2008

PRESIDENT: JENNIFER WEYRETER called the meeting to order at 9:05a.m. Those present at the meeting were:

Jennifer Weyreter, Amy Kline, Michelle O’Connor, Sharyn McNutt-Kaiser, John Williams, Maria Cottone, Bonnie Grimble, Connie Mitchell, Lynn Akerhielm, Kim Blackburn, Deborah Heede, Janette Garner, Rhonda Petersen, Cindy Pitman, Angie Frankenberger, Samantha Walters, Laura Moehling, Elaine Murphy, Nanette Barrett, Sandy Speer, Nancy Johnson, Capi Scheidler & Tricia Hackett

Mrs. Grimble and Mrs. Mitchell from the CHS Media Center were present to discuss the Media Center fundraiser support. For several years, the CHS PTO Board has held a Barnes & Noble fundraiser in the fall, to help support the special Media Center projects. The most money raised was, $2275.00, but it has declined since then. This year, the board voted to pull this event from our calendar, as the process and time greatly outweighed the proceeds from this event. Several fundraising ideas were discussed and the PTO was thanked for all of our support. Looking at our budget and discussing the fact that the Media Center is the one place that all of our students use while at CHS, it was motioned and passed for the Media Center to become a new line item on the CHS budget, effective immediately. A check in the amount of $2000.00 will be presented to the Media Center for the current school year. It was also passed that the Media Center PTO Board position be removed from our current and future slates and that the $2000.00 line item will carry forward from this point, in lieu of a fundraiser.

VICE PRESIDENT: AMY KLINE

·  Slating of the 2008-2009 PTO Board continues. If interested or know of someone who might be, contact Amy Kline at , (H) 815-1653, ©418-3191. The positions still needing to be slated are: One more person for Homecoming, one more person for Purdue Varsity Glee Club, one more person for Scholastic Banquet and one more person for Volunteers.

SECRETARY: SHARYN MCNUTT-KAISER thanked Tricia Hackett for filling in last month & presented the minutes from the February 5, 2008 meeting. They were approved as presented.

TREASURER: MICHELLE O’CONNOR reported that we have approximately $40,000 in our account which will need to be spent and not held over into the next fiscal year. After all expenses have been met, the Board will look at presenting Mr. Williams with a check, to be used by staff and teachers, for our students. This process was successful two years ago and Mr. Williams will report to us next month how these funds were spent over the course of a two year period.

PRINCIPAL: MR. JOHN WILLIAMS

·  Last Friday’s USA Today newspaper contained an article where CHS was mentioned. The Siemens’ Foundation recognizes one school from each state for their achievement in the number of AP tests given and the AP test scores. CHS was the school recognized for the state of Indiana. The foundation also recognizes the individual students that are the state winners. Both of the students recognized for the state of Indiana, were also from CHS. Our AP (Advanced Placement) testing continues to grow in numbers and in strength.

·  The new “Distinguished Grad Program” is taking shape for the ’08 seniors. As mentioned previously, there is no longer a Valedictorian or Salutatorian for the senior class. Instead, many students will be recognized for their scholastic, leadership, service and extracurricular accomplishments. Students must apply for this honor and applications were due on February 15. There were 137 applications. A point system will now be applied to designate “distinguished” and “Commended” graduates. The student with the largest amount of points will be the student speaker at the graduation ceremony. There will be three other distinguished student speakers, chosen by an application process.

·  The “weapon at school incident” was briefly mentioned. Mr. Williams reiterated that no one was ever in danger and that the students did a great job of reporting and handling the situation.

·  CHS reached the 100th State Championship milestone Saturday night, as the girls basketball team won at Conseco! The next closest school to our record is North Central, with 58 total State championships.

FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE: MARIA COTTONE, CHS COUNSELOR

·  AP registration began February 14 and runs through March 7

·  Seniors earning a scholarship must notify the counseling office, in order to be recognized.

·  The ACT test that was scheduled during Carmel’s Spring Break, has been cancelled

·  Our sympathy and condolences continue to go out to the family and friends of Michael Schenkle. If your student is still struggling over this tragedy, please encourage them to see their CHS counselor for support.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

PURDUE GLEE CLUB: NANCY JOHNSON, LAURA MCCOLLUM, MICHELLE SPAHR & SANDY SPEER

·  Thanks and congratulations offered to all! Good attendance, in spite of the inclement weather! There were 576 reserved seats sold and 106 general admission sold.

·  Don’t forget to visit Carrabba’s Italian Grill and thank them, as once again they catered the meal for the Glee Club and their families and provided a gift card for the PTO to give to our M.C. of the evening.

·  Purdue raised their cost by $1000.00, but we are still hoping to net around $3000.00 for this event. We will wait for our final figures before deciding how much to donate to The CHS Performing Arts Dept.

·  A coat check service was provided by the F&CS Dept, as a fund raiser. Comments were positive.

SCHOLASTIC BANQUET: KIM BLACKBURN & CHERI MARRS

·  Will be held, April 21, 2008 at The Ritz Charles

·  Has changed this year due to no longer having class rank. The top 3% of each class is now being invited, which means approximately 30 students per grade.

·  The CHS Hall of Fame Banquet and The Scholastic Banquet have now been combined. Therefore the Carmel High School grad that is being inducted to The CHS Hall of Fame, will now be the guest speaker for this event.
