SEAMEO-UNESCO Education Congress and Expo

27 - 29 May 2004 at the QueenSirikitNationalConvention Center, Bangkok

BANGKOK – The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), the

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)and the Ministry of Education, Thailand are co-organising an “Education Congress and Expo” at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok from 27 to 29 May 2004.

H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has graciously agreed to preside over the opening ceremony of the SEAMEO-UNESCO Education Congress and Expo.

The major goals of this Congress and Expo are to enhance regional and international understanding and co-operation among educators and major education stakeholders, and explore new avenues for a better future in the areas of education, culture and technology.

The Congress theme is “Adapting to Changing Times and Needs” and serves as an opportunity

for education decision-makers at all levels (academics, researchers and practitioners in education, development agencies and non-government organization specialists and students from South East Asia and beyond) to interact with each other and to reflect on topics of regional and global concerns.

Participantsfrom over 100 countries will discuss in plenary and parallel sessions as well as in discussion groups with a number of distinguished academic leaders, among whom Sir John Daniel, Assistant Director-General for Education, UNESCO Paris in France, Dr. Katarina Tomasevski, Faculty of Law, University of Lund in Sweden and Dr. Azmi Bin Zakaria, Director of Educational Planning and Research Division, Ministry of Education in Malaysia. A selection of the topics are: how to make schools more child-friendly and inclusive; how ICT can break down barriers to education; what can be done in terms of curriculum reform in education; how to explore the interface between HIV/AIDS and education and many other topics.

The Expo will showcase new publications, products and programmes related to education, ICT culture, and other areas of the international and national education marketplace. It will provide a unique opportunity for networking and getting in touch with representatives of education organisations, higher education institutions, ICT companies and related businesses from different countries.
