Second Semester

Global History Accelerated Project

LINKING THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT

The purposes of this project are to:

a- meet the Accelerated Option 2nd semester project requirement.

b- examine a modern conflict in greater detail

c- link past ideas, places, cultures, events and people with the present

d- develop research skills which help to identify and explain the historical origins of a modern world problem/conflict

e- use Writing Correctly to apply effective research skills

f- develop the time management skills and discipline to complete a long-term project

The Project Defined

The present and future are inextricably linked to the past. Therefore current issues / conflicts are better understood in their historical context. When did the conflict originate? What was at the root of the conflict? Who were the parties to the disagreement? How did the conflict evolve over time? What is different/similar today? What are the opposing viewpoints today? Is the conflict resolved/close to being resolved?

You are to choose a conflict that is currently in the news or has been in the news in the past few years, and find the roots or logical beginning point of this conflict. This beginning point must be at least 150 years ago. Then trace the conflict from its beginning to today. This will probably be of the nature of several "snapshots" of the significant events of the conflict. No more than two students may choose any topic. Topics will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis.

You should begin your research with newspaper and magazine articles. Use EbscoHost and ProQuest databases to gather recent information. Copies of these articles are to be submitted with your project. You will also need to use books and reputable Internet sources.
