Agenda

  1. Welcome / Webinar Procedures – Gary Miller, Co-Chair

2.  Presentation on Local Foods

·  Julie Bates, Green Center Manager, Lincoln Land Community College, “The Role of Community Colleges in Developing the Local Food System in Illinois”

Julie described a white paper that was produced based on a survey of credit and non-credit courses offered by community colleges on this topic. A task force was formed to identify the role the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) and community colleges can play in supporting the growth of local food economies, on campus and in the community. Challenges identified include the need for curriculum modules, more hands-on training, close collaboration with the community, and a consistent definition of what is a local food. The white paper is available for downloading at: http://www.igencc.org/sites/default/files/u6/IGEN_Local%20Food%20Task%20Force%20White%20Paper_FINAL7.18.11.pdf

·  Dr. Tim Lindsey, Director, Energy and Sustainable Business Programs, BIS-Business Innovation Services, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, “Promoting Local Foods in Illinois: DCEO and U of I Projects” Tim reported on a project funded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity which has as a focus to increase jobs in Illinois, especially year-round jobs. He took a systems approach to examining the issue and found that demand is greater than supply. Bottlenecks and obstacles to increasing the supply chain for local foods were examined in more detail. Proposed strategies include using technology to lengthen the growing season and storage capabilities, recruit and train more producers such as in partnership with community colleges, educate producers on how to better access the market for local foods, and provide access to food hubs for aggregation, processing, marketing, etc. The I-Supply web site is designed to provide customer requirements to producers to address some of the needs identified. Tim’s presentation is also available at: http://wp.istc.illinois.edu/sustainableuniversity/presentations/
