INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, COMPUTERRESOURCESCENTER (LVC)

DEFINITION:

Under general direction to plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise a wide range of instructional assistance activities in the Lompoc Valley Center Computer Resources Center (CRC) laboratory.

Under minimum supervision performs a wide range ofresponsible instructional support and clerical duties related to the operation of the computer resources laboratory at the LompocValleyCenter and does related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The instructional assistant performs professional work and assumes responsibility for the operation of the Lompoc Valley Center CRC, including procedural and technical operations, and relieves the Executive Dean, Off-Campus Programs, of general program administration as it relates to instructional assistance support activities in the Lompoc Valley Center CRC. General program administration involves independent judgment in the interpretation and application of applicable college policy and procedure and interaction with faculty, support staff, and administration requiring sound judgment and good communication skills. The instructional assistant works closely with faculty in providing instructional assistance to students; gives direction and guidance to employees in lower classifications; and supervises student workers. An incumbent in this class works closely with faculty in providing clerical support and in providing instructional assistance for students enrolled in programs of study (currently business emphasis) associated with the computer resources laboratory at the Lompoc Valley Center and assumes responsibility for the operation of the center laboratory, including procedural and technical operations, and, thereby, relieves the supervisor of general program administration as this relates to instructional support activities. An incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of keyboarding equipment and the techniques/methods, competency in English grammar, and knowledge of microcomputer usage, and exercise good judgment and initiative in aiding students and assisting individual instructors with traditional, as well as short-term, training programs and workshops. It is important that the incumbent model a calm, efficient, and effective lab environment, including appropriate work habits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.Assists faculty with course development and modification to ensure that curriculum and the hardware/software requirements are correct, accurate, and relevant and assists with establishment and implementation of the Lompoc Valley Center CRC laboratory goals and priorities, with the development and/or refinement of computer programs to create or improve upon user-friendly, efficient computer stations, and with the development of learning exercises and instructional materials, including multimedia presentations.

2. Assists faculty with implementation of computer resources (CRC) laboratory goals and priorities and with the use of learning exercises and instructional materials to aid in student comprehension of course work.

3.Prepares and explains the Lompoc Valley CenterCRC laboratory orientation materials to faculty, staff, and students; instructs students and support staff and assists faculty in the use of computer equipment and software applications and answers questions and assists in resolving problems related to the methods and procedures for utilizing computer applications; provides a liaison with the Santa Maria lab instructors and support staff to ensure consistency and uniformity of the CRC computer-dependent curricula and related documents.

4.Explains, demonstrates, and presents information to students in a logical, accurate, and interesting manner; provides information on available resources to students, encourages student participation, and advises students regarding learning materials relative to CRC laboratory course content; schedules students on equipment; assists in setting up individual programs for students, and informs and assists students with program requirements; checks, reviews, calculates, and records scores; helps students with use of resource materials, formatting, grammar, and math applications.

5.Maintains student records in order to provide data for the faculty to assess student progress. This data may include providing preliminary evaluations of tests, quizzes, projects, and assignments, and may also provide faculty with comments on content, technique, areas of needed improvement, and student progress.

6.Gives direction and guidance to classified support staff in lower level classifications; hires student assistants and tutors, establishes work schedules, trains and supervises work, and signs monthly time records.

7.Coordinates purchases and other expenditures, monitors accounts, and maintains related records and reports; assists in making recommendations for purchase of new information system equipment, software and related materials.

8. Answers the telephone and acts as receptionist, greets students and registers new enrollees, records and delivers messages, organizes supplies, duplicates and collates, keyboards lists and materials; maintains up-to-date computer resources inventories including hardware and software, dispenses and shelves software and other laboratory materials, insures usage of software in compliance with copyright laws, and performs other clerical tasks.

9.Coordinates, supervises, and participates in the inspection, repair, and minor maintenance of instructional materials and media; assesses the level of network equipment/software malfunction problems to determine when to request technical support from Information Technology Services and takes appropriate action; maintains web site for Off-Campus Programs.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Participates in the planning, designing, and maintaining of the CRC laboratory to ensure a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment for students and staff.

2.Attends appropriate faculty meetings (business/mathematics/computer science), participates on committees and attends conferences, classes, and workshops as needed and approved by supervisor to maintain, update, and increase knowledge and skills.

3.Advises continuing and prospective students about possible course selection sequence options in CRC laboratory related courses and programs.

4.Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

College-level subject area germane to the significant instructional area(s) of the CRC laboratory;

Instructional and tutorial methods and techniques;

Keyboarding, spreadsheets, databases, word processing, operating systems, Internet, presentations, desktop publishing, machine transcription, office procedures, filing, records management, and other instructional course work that relies on the ability to use the microcomputer as an instructional tool;

Supervisory techniques;

Basic functions and operations of business/office computers, computer programs, and local area networks;

General principles of office automation, financial records, and budget procedures;

Operating systems and related software used by the CRC laboratory.

Demonstrated ability to:

Understand and carry out oral and written directions, including the application of technical manuals;

Supervise subordinate personnel and coordinate the CRC laboratory and classrooms;

Investigate, research, and analyze problems, devise solutions, and present recommendations;

Learn, understand, interpret, and apply regulations, policies, guidelines, and procedures;

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work;

Instruct or tutor students effectively;

Provide instructors with appropriate assistance in the assessment of student achievement and diagnosis of learning problems;

Work with minimum supervision.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor’s degree in business education with course work in office automation, secretarial science, or a related field and one year of related experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities necessary for successful job performance, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Completion of business classes with an associate of science degree in secretary science, office management, or a closely related field, and two years’ of increasingly responsible experience which demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities which are necessary for successful job performance, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Working Conditions:

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment, at a desk or at a computer terminal.

The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the
regular workday.

The incumbent will have contact, in person or on the telephone, with executive, management, supervisory, academic and classified staff and the general public.

Physical Demands:

Typically may sit for extended periods of time.

Operates a computer keyboard

Communicates over the telephone and in person.

Regularly lifts, carries and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

A sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.
