MIS 370 Spring 2012

ss1 Spreadsheet Assignment 1 Page 2 of 2

For your first spreadsheet assignment, you are to complete:

Case Problem 4 – Blue Marlin Gas

at the end of Excel Tutorial 9 (pp EX548-549), and

Case Problem 4 – NewGen Robotics

at the end of Excel Tutorial 10 (pp EX611-612).

In order to save paper you are NOT to generate any printed output for this assignment, but where directed you must format your spreadsheet so that it would print properly. I will use the “print preview” option to check for correct page formatting. You will only be turning the file(s) associated with your spreadsheet(s).

Be sure to include any additional files that are required for the assignment (e.g. if the assignment requires that you generate a PDF file then you need to include that in the archive file that you turn in).

Only turn in files directly associated with the assignment. You may be penalized for turning in unneeded files.

You will be turning in a zipped archive of your workbook and any associated files. To create this archive, do the following:

-  create a directory named for the assignment using the standard naming conventions (e.g. if I were turning in the assignment I would name the directory ss1-LatimerJB)

-  copy all of the files associated with the assignment into the directory

-  use the Windows “Send To” utility to create a zipped archive of the directory and its contents

-  Remember the files inside your zipped archive must be correctly named using the standard naming conventions.

-  For this assignment you will be turning in two spreadsheet files. In order to distinguish between the files the filename prefixes should be:

o  ss1-09 for the E-Park Real Estate case

o  ss1-10 for the Fairway Convention Center case

-  If I were turning in the assignment my filename would be

o  ss1-09-LatimerJB.xlsx

o  ss1-10-LatimerJB.xlsx

-  The above are only examples. Nobody in this class shares my last name so nobody in this class should turn in a file with Latimer in the filename.

-  Since you will be renaming both spreadsheet files nobody should be turning in files with condo or fairway in the filename (unless, of course, if your last name happens to include condo or fairway).

-  The zip archive file will just have the ss1 extension.

-  I generally advise students to start each assignment by correctly naming their files and placing them in a correctly named turn in directory.

It is expected that you will have completed Tutorials 9 & 10 before you begin working on this assignment. For this assignment you are required to create and save any needed scenarios, scenario summary reports, one and two variable data tables, and solver models using the techniques as described in the tutorials.

Be sure that you understand the basic financial and economic principles covered in these tutorials. The principles may be used in test questions.

The class variance on spreadsheet skills should not be very high. While this is a group project you can help individuals in other groups with questions and suggestions. Each group is required to create an original workbook. If, while completing the assignment you corrupt or lose your workbook file you are expected to recreate the entire assignment. You are not allowed to copy any part of a workbook file created by another group.

Terms of the assignment:

-  This is a group project.

Minimum group size is one (1) member.

Maximum group size is three (3) members.

-  You will turn a single correctly named zip file containing the following:

o  Your correctly named workbook files.

o  All associated files.

o  Due via email on the assignment due date.

-  Your assignment must be created using Microsoft Excel.

-  The assignment prefix is ss1

-  Your zip file must be sent to me as an email attachment.

-  The subject line on the email message must be: ss1 submission

-  The assignment is due by Friday, 03/09 @ 11:59pm

-  A days-cubed late penalty will be applied for each day or partial day the assignment is late.

-  Files that are incorrectly named have not been correctly turned in and may be considered late until a correctly named file is received.

-  You are required to retain a copy of all assignments submitted until after the final course grades are posted. When turning in your assignment it is recommended that you include yourself (and all group members) on the CC line of the email message. Your copy of the email will be evidence of when you turned in an assignment and will also provide you with a backup copy of your work.
