Chemical Elements Project #1

Purpose: To provide a more meaningful understanding of the elements of the periodic table. To analyze the chemical data of an element of the periodic table and present this information through a “creative avenue” to other class members.

Method: Each student will choose a chemical element to research. No two students can choose the same element. I will allow two students to work together; however, two elements must presented in the collaboration. Each student will research his or her chosen element and answer the 18 questions below. The information obtained by these questions will be presented to the class in one of the following ways:

power point presentation – 10 slides minimum; must include images of element, uses, and compounds; Remember not to read slides but you can use note cards to assist your presentation.

poem – must include alliteration, assonance, consonance, metaphor, personification, simile, or symbolism; structure can be in the form of conventional rhyme and meter, free verse, sonnet, or ode.

song - minimum of 4 verses -4 lines each; you may bring instruments to play or cd/tape for background music.

skit – 2 students; 6-8 minutes; must have 2 items per element used in skit that relates to element for visual aide

dramatic monologue – 3-5 minutes; must have 2 items that relates to element for visual aide

All other types of presentations must be approved by Mrs. Propst prior to the due dates

All of these presentations are to be conducted in proper taste. Any use of inappropriate language or behavior will result in ceasing of the presentation, a grade of zero and disciplinary action. A copy of your presentation must be given to the instructor before performing or presenting.

Due Date: Elements must be chosen by (M/Th Classes) Thursday, September 22, 2011 & (T/F Classes) Friday, September 23, 2011 and posted as a discussion board thread on the blackboard site for Chemistry. I will open this discussion board this Friday, September 15, 2011 by 11pm.

Presentation/Performance will be (M/Th Classes) Monday, October 10, 2011 & (T/F Classes)Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
