Activity 10 – Don’t become an alcohol induced couched potato…DOH!!!

Ok, we have started to look at ways of increasing someone’s physical activity levels – we are now going to explore strategies if their alcohol levels are excessive, in other words if they drink too much!

Let’s look at alcohol then. If you are giving advice on alcohol consumption it is necessary for you to know what safe levels are before you can make an informed judgment, so read on…

To save you having to find this out the important information is included for you below. However, there is also a good calculator on the site as well……so use it!

Task

Have a look at these two people and work out the amount of units they are drinking per week. Are the levels safe?

Mary drinks about 4 Bacardi’s a week when she goes out with her mates and also shares a bottle of red wine with her boyfriend twice a week. / Malcolm likes his beer and enjoys 3 pints of bitter at his local 5 times a week. He never goes out on a Sunday but drinks 5 pints on a Saturday night along with a whisky before he goes home.

If your subject is only drinking a little bit over the threshold it shouldn’t be a major task to get them to cut down. If, on the other hand, their levels are very high and you have concerns there are other avenues open to them which you need to be aware of…

What do you think they may be?

We can now look at some alternatives……don’t forget to make notes giving detailed explanations as we go. Some web site addresses are also given below so you can research some more!

Therapy
Detoxification
Self-Help

Can you think of any other alternative treatment and therapies for cutting down the alcohol?
