GENERAL NOTES: Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long hair should be tied back. Strings and hoods hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed or tucked inside of coveralls.

Safe Work procedure:

Step / Description / Hazard / Controls
1 / Inspect work area. Be conscious of hazards such as clutter, spills, flammable materials or sources of ignition, i.e. incandescent lamps/welding, grinding or cutting equipment / Trip, fall, slip--Fire, explosion / Remove clutter and clean up spills. Remove flammable or combustible material.
2 / Inspect power tools for damage or defect/check chisel ends for fracture or wear. Ensure retention collar or spring is in place and not damaged --lubricate tool as per operating hand book. / Faulty tools can cause injury to face, fingers, hands, etc / Do not use tools that are damaged or faulty. Inform teacher/supervisor if tool requires repair. Inform others working with you
3 / Remove/relocate any components near work area that could cause injury if punctured by the chisel, i.e. A/C lines under pressure or fuel lines / Sudden release of pressurized gasses can cause injury/punctured fuel lines present risk of fire/explosion. / Avoid using tool near pressurized lines i.e. fuel lines. Wear your--Personal Protective Equipment. Note location of fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
4 / Hold chisel firmly against work to be cut. Ensure air line is not pinched or tangled. Operate tool by pushing button / Chisel can slip from work and cause damage or injury. --Air tools create excessive noise. --Metal fragments can penetrate skin and eyes. / Hold chisel firmly, pay attention and don't become distracted.--Hearing protection is essential during this step.--Wear Personal Protective Equipment, CSA eye glasses/goggles, hearing protection, and leather gloves.
5 / Clean area/tidy up any waste metal/fragments.--Check chisel for any damage, if not damaged clean and properly store. / Trip, slip, fall. / Practice good housekeeping, always clean up after job is completed.--Care for and maintain tools.
