Cohen, p. (2017), A history of hard drives. Available at,
Summary:
This article demonstrates emergence of hard drive that implies to how useful invention of hard drive for era of modern computing. I chose this article because of continuously increasing importance of the storage as well as, how hard drive to better contributes in this era.
This article describes revolution of hard drive that shape size and capacity of data storing. IBM was made first hard drive based computer which is known as RAMAC. That storage known as the IBM 350. It is huge hardware like two door refrigerator which i require one room space to operate. And that time hardware gave five-megabyte space with high cost than now.
In addition, IBM was introduced second hard drive at 1962 which is known as IBM 1311 that developed model than previous has more storage space and smaller. Then after released IBM 1316 “disk packs” which is flexible and gave more storage they needed and quite affordable than others. Thesedays, we can easily put 2 TB of hard drives in our pockets which is size of postage stamp.
I found this article very useful because of increasing requirement of physical storage in era of cloud computing in day by day life. Storage is very inevitable invention among computing hardware because of data.
Week 2
The text discusses the components and activities of operating systems however is largely silent on the individuals who played a role in their development. Find and summarise a resource that describes ONEsuch individual. The individual should have had a significant influence on the writing or development of operating systems.

Summary:
This article describes evolution of operating system and who played role to develop behind the significant system. There is one reason behind chosen this article that article explored some history and precious things. Precious things like how many OS were already developed and who is the lead inventor.
In this article, authors demonstrate that Microsoft windows first version is truly reflection of the IBM which is suits of personal range of computers as they want. Furthermore, first operating system was built in 1981 by Microsoft and known as MS-DOS. Then Microsoft used name of windows since 1985. Microsoft operating system were modified to meet IBM requirements and according them needs.
In addition, first operating system was developed by general motors in 1956 for IBM which is run in single mainframe computers. Then IBM was followed previous OS and created own operating system that they want. At that time IBM was started distributing operating system with their own computers. However, that time IBM was not only distributor which creating operating system. There were many more vendors such as control data corporation, Burroughs Corporation, computer Science Corporation, GE, Xerox, digital equipment corporation in 1960.
At last, operating system is simple software that manages computer complete hardware and provide tools which is application need to operate. This article useful because of article equipped with detailed information about operating system evolution and how system varies with each other.

The Internet didn’t just appear – it was an evolution from earlier networks. Find and summarise a resource that describes ONEof the networks that led to the development of the modern Internet.
Title and Reference:
Navarria, G. (2017) how the internet was born: from the Arpanet to the internet.
Available at,

Summary:
This article describes evolution of internet. Internet terms that not directly come as world wide web. Internet term emerges from networks. I chose Arpanet as network because this network contributes significant role in miracle emergence.
At July 1975, this network directly under controlled by defence communication agency(DCA). that time there were 57 nodes already in the networks. Because of network expansion it was very difficult to find who was using system. And there were no single tools to check the network users and their activities.
Arpanet network has been popular since world war three. Actually, at that time Arpanet network has been used by military purposes and military personnel or Arpanet sponsors. By 1980 Arpanet networks gave open access area for both authorised and unauthorised users. That steps were led to drastic dropped to computer prices.
By the end of the year of world war that defence department taken big steps towards illegal penetration. in the step was split computer network into two parts for military and civilian users. Military networks called MILNET. And second one still known as ARPANET that uses as research purpose. Arpanet was widely used by researchers and developers. Year of 1980 Arpanet was largely handled by NSF (national science foundation). That was bigger transition in emergence of internet.
This article very useful in several ways that give essential information about internet revolutions. Furthermore, give detailed information about networks and basically what the networks was and what was the usages and users.

Ethernet is an example of a Layer Two (L2) data link protocol that is discussed in the text. Find and summarise a resource that describes the features and uses of ONE other L2 protocol that is not discussed in the text (i.e. NOT Ethernet).
Title and Reference:
Thakur, D., high-level data link control, available at,
Summary:
This article describes HDLC (high-level data link control) protocol that is transmission protocol. HDLC used at the data link layer which is known as the second layer of the OSI data communication model. HDLC developed from synchronous data link control protocol(SDLC) which standard recommend by IBM.
This layer 2 protocol is also known as bit oriented protocol. HDLC carry both half-duplex and full-duplex communication through point to point communication as well as multi point. HDLC supports different communication modes that divided into three modes such as normal unbalanced, asynchronous, asynchronous balanced. among three modes that two communication station one is primary and other is secondary. All three modes communicate through X.25 packet switching networks.
In addition, two others protocol that subset of HDLC namely LAP-B(link access procedure-balanced) and LAP-d(link access procedure D-channel). LAP-B is very efficient protocol which require minimal control. LAP-B also bit oriented synchronous that provide data transparency over point to point and full duplex communication.
HDLC protocol has three frames to communicate namely I-frame (information frame), S-frame (supervisory frame), U-frame (unnumbered frame). I-frame only carry user’s data to the information field. S-frame does not have information field. This frame carries only control information and do error control. And last U-frames uses for only system management.
I found this article useful because article demonstrates how HDLC protocol work over data link layer. Also, HDLC works over point to point communication as well as full duplex which is very essential for efficient communication.
