School History
History of Carl Albert Junior High
The newspapers of the early 1940's announced the formation of an air force base to be located in the eastern quadrant of Oklahoma County. With the advent of this facility came hoards of World War II "arsenal" workers and their families. They settled in two brand new towns that sprung up near the new base. These communities were the visions of W. P. "Bill" Atkinson, who founded Midwest City, and Mr. George Epperly, who named "his" new development Del City. With this influx of new families, a school district was quickly created, and Oscar Rose was hired as its first superintendent.
The communities and the Mid-Del School District prospered, adding schools as the population grew. An expansion toward the eastern part of Midwest City necessitated the creation of a new junior high and high school in that area of the community. In 1961, construction began on this facility; students, grades seven through twelve, moved into a shiny new building located on south Post Road, in January, 1963. It was named Carl Albert Junior-Senior High School, after Carl B. Albert, a well- respected Oklahoman who, at that time, was serving as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in Washington.
The area surrounding the school continued to grow, so that, in 1971, Carl Albert Junior High was given its own building. Located a quarter of a mile south of the original facility, only seventh and eighth graders resided there that first year. It was a lovely new structure, BUT, it lacked a cafeteria. Each day students hopped on buses and headed toward Carl Albert High School for lunch, then returned to the junior high building for their afternoon classes.
Since that time, the school building has received several additions. (One school year in the mid-1970's, there weretwentyportable classrooms on the school grounds!) Our campus now consists of three physical education facilities, two fine arts buildings, two industrial arts workshops, a media forum, 55 classrooms, a media center with over 10,000 library books, three computer lab areas and, yes, a cafeteria. We even have a really cool art gallery.
The curriculum taught at Carl Albert Junior High has always been of the highest quality. Our school is extremely proud of the "kids" who have walked our halls, slammed our lockers, and studied hard. Students from our school have gone on to become responsible and caring citizens of their communities. We even have an alum who is presently living his dream by playing for the Chicago Bears! Our mission is to helpallof our students achieve their potential.
Throughout our school's history, from its fine facilities to its exceptional students and staff, Carl Albert Junior High "hails its victors valiant, hails its conquering heroes, and hails its mighty Titans, silver and red!"
At the beginning of the2007-2008 school year, all Mid-Del junior highs were converted to middle schools. A new chapter in this great schools historyhas begun and is growing strongwith the title Carl Albert Middle School.
