‘This is not a shop. It is a tool to raise environmental consciousness among people and a platform for farmers to fetch just prices for their organic farm products.’ Thus reads the slogan on the wall of the shop as you enter Ami-Dhara, the organic produce outlet in the plush Race Course Towers, in the upmarket Pashabhai Park residential colony of Vadodara city. JATAN (meaning ‘care’) is a voluntary organisation that promotes organic farming in Gujarat on the lines of Gandhian values and principles. JATAN is comprised of scientists, farmers and consumers who are concerned about agriculture, environment and health. Its primary objective is the promotion of organic farming. A pack of Tur dal being brought by a housewife at Jatan’s outlet is not just grocery, but a message for sustainable living. Organic products like these are interesting tools to educate the urban consumers. JATAN runs two organic outlets on no-proft, no-loss basis. 80-90% of retail price goes to the farmer

ASAL (which means ‘real’ in Hindi) stands for a system of production that respects the general well-being of the planet. Its ideology is to promote a non-exploitative, environment-friendly, healthy society.
ASAL practices what it preaches. The ASAL premises were constructed using lime (i.e. without cement) and adopting the principles of Vastu-Shastra. The flooring and interior is also done with natural and traditional materials thus creating an environment which gives peace to the mind, comfort to the body and is hygienic at all times.
ASAL is perhaps the first modern commercial premise that deliberately shuns electricity. Lighting comes instead from eco friendly castor oil lamps; traditional hand operated fans provide soothing breeze. Rain water is harvested; traditional fuels like wood and coal are used for cooking.
All products sold at ASAL are organically grown, eco-friendly, completely natural and above all traditional items. They ensure that all their products are made following traditional methods of slow manual processing thereby eliminating use of fossil fuels and retaining the beneficial natural qualities of the product. All the products are hand made. This is a conscious decision to foster traditional craftsmanship and promote indigenous skills.
Products at ASAL include organically grown and produced foods like cereals, all kind of pulses, spices, edible oils, jaggery & sugar, etc. There are a wide range of body care products made by ayurvedic and traditional methods. Organic, non violent, handspun & woven textiles and clothing. Hand crafted toys. Handmade bronze, brass and copper utensils. Glass lamps etc.
ASAL products include a wide array of preparations prescribed by ayurvedic physicians called Vedraj that are made with the ayurvedic understanding of kapha, pitta and vayu - the three doshas or humors that are balanced in order to maintain physical and spiritual wellbeing.
