Shelton, Connecticut – June 24, 2002 In March 1875, Edwina Von Stetina became the new mistress of Mewingham Manor, a rambling country estate left to her by her eccentric Uncle Katt. While exploring the grounds, Edwina discovers a strange new species—tiny winged cats she dubs “Flittens”. In this Victorian sketchbook-journal, Edwina chronicles her first few months at the Manor as she discovers many variations of this curious new species. Edwina introduces us to these creatures with more than 50 color paintings and 100 sketches that capture their strange, sometimes cat-like, sometimes butterfly-like behavior. Edwina’s journal is filled with interesting insights, scientific notes on the Flittens, and even some of her amazing research on Flittens at the BritishMuseum in London.
Mewingham Manor: Observations on a Curious New Species is the fictional journal-sketchbook of the imaginary great aunt of real-life author and artist Laura Von Stetina. Laura creates a magical world where miniature furry caterpillars, with whiskers and pointy ears, become Flittens, tiny cats with butterfly wings; a world where miniscule winged mice, “Minis”, sleep in the Swiss cheese and dance on the flowers; a world where the impossible seems possible and the strange is almost commonplace. Set in Victorian England, Mewingham Manor: Observations on a Curious NewSpecies is a whimsical fantasy that will make you look for closely at butterflies to see if they are lapping up your milk or licking pollen off their paws.
