Dear Weddington Families,
We are on the home stretch! It is amazing how quickly the school year has passed! Once again, Weddington Elementary had an outstanding school year. Seeing academic and social growth of our Wildcats throughout the school year is the best part of our job! With the amount of high level instruction that takes place throughout the school year, research shows a pattern of summer learning loss during the summer months (https://www.edutopia.org/blog/how-to-beat-summer-learning-loss-anne-obrien). The Weddington Elementary administration and staff encourage you to continue working on reading, reading comprehension, and math during the summer months.
With that being said, we are encouraging all students to participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge 2017. The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online program for kids. They can log the minutes spent reading during the summer months, receive virtual rewards, and enter sweepstakes. The students can read independently or they can choose to tie their minutes to our school. At the end of the summer, the school in each of the fifty U.S. states with the most minutes logged will be honored with a celebratory “party in a box”. In addition, every Weddington Wildcat who reads at least 2,300 minutes during the 77 days of summer break, will get to participate in our school “Summer Book Celebration” in August. That means students will need to read on average, 30 minutes per day! You can do this Wildcats! Be on the look-out for more information in your child’s June 9th report card. You may also go to http://www.scholastic.com/ups/campaigns/src-2017/
Also, be sure to check out the new titles Mrs. Bomfim has listed below. You can access digital copies!
Finally, I want to wish all of our wonderful Wildcat families a very safe, restful, relaxing summer break. I hope you are able to create many wonderful memories with your family and loved ones. Thank you for sharing your precious children with us and we will see you at Open House on August 25th!
Yours in education,

The EOG assessments for our 3rd – 5th Grade students are almost upon us. Thank you to all parents that have volunteered to be a proctor! Our teachers and students are working diligently to prepare for success! Parents, please keep the following items in mind as you continue to support your student(s) during this preparation process:
·  Maintain a consistent nighttime routine to ensure adequate rest
·  Practice, practice, practice (flashcards, review notes, etc.)!
·  Come to school on testing days following a good night of rest and a nutritious breakfast
·  Cell phones/electronic devices are not permitted on testing days. If a student is found in possession of one, this will result in a misadministration.
·  Visitors will not be permitted to attend lunch with their child on testing days (for all students in grades K-5).
Thank you all for your support of our 3rd – 5th Grade students! We appreciate your dedication to their academic success!
Sincerely,
Emily Kraftson
From Our Media Center Coordinator
With summer approaching, students should be thinking about their summer reading. Our Media Center has added the eBooks to our collection. Students can download them on their ipads/ phones to read them during the summer.
