Title:13 Colonies

Instructional activity: Students will create a thinking map with independence as the central topic. They will make personal connections to the meaning of independence in their own life.
Directions for activity:
  1. Whole group instruction using Unit 5 p216-219 in the Social Studies textbook. Lesson covers the significance of Independence Day as a national celebration. Students can reflect on the love of freedom and individualism in America.
  2. Teacher will model making a thinking map. This can be done using materials in the classroom or in the computer lab using the Thinking Map program.
  3. Students will create their own thinking map with independence as the central topic.
  4. Students will use their thinking map to write a reflection about independence.
  5. Students will share reflections in small group or whole group. Teacher can lead discussions connecting independence to the character traits of good citizens.
