East Sussex Maritime Season 2004

  1. East Sussex is defined by the sea and has around 80% of the residents living along the coastal strip. East Sussex's unique character has developed and been shaped over the centuries as much by the waters greeting our shoreline at landmarks such as the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, as by the activities of its human inhabitants.
  1. The ‘Maritime Season’ is a programme created by East Sussex County Council for the summer of 2004. It will follow a similar format to the ‘Woodland Season’ programme promoted by the County Council last autumn and will run from May to August 2004.
  1. The aim is to support the Council’s economic and environmental targets by encouraging local people and visitors from further afield to explore the maritime possibilities the County has to offer. This will be done by bringing together a programme of events with a maritime theme or link which people of all ages and interests can enjoy. Local people and visitors will be given the opportunity to ‘get closer’ to the sea by exploring more of the East Sussex coastline and seashore, which offer a unique and ever-changing environment to enjoy and learn from.
  1. The Maritime Season 2004 will give visitors the opportunity to meet real people whose lives and livelihoods depend in various ways on the sea or simply on being by the coast. It will include people who:

·  Make or sell marine products;

·  Fish our waters or who cook the fruits of the sea for local restaurants, B&Bs or visitor attractions;

·  Are tasked with protecting our vulnerable coastline, beaches, estuaries and their marine inhabitants;

·  Help visitors explore rockpools, shipwrecks, lighthouses and coastal towers;

·  Show visitors the sea creatures and seabirds;

·  Volunteer to save the lives of sailors in distress;

·  Collect driftwood and sea products to create artwork;

·  Take visitors on coastal walks and cycle rides;

·  Sell or cook seafood and local fish.

  1. Although the deadline for inclusion in the Maritime Season colour programme listing has now passed, organisations that would like their event considered for the Maritime Season 2004 could still have their details included on the website.
  1. A variety of events will be considered for the programme including open days, displays, exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, training events, presentations, award ceremonies, talks, slideshows, tours, competitions, surveys and so on. We would be interested in hearing from businesses and visitor attractions by/connected to the sea, events and campaigns with a maritime link and groups, organisations, individuals and charities connected with the maritime environment.

7.  Organisations wishing to participate should submit details of their events to Claire Morgan, ESCC Environmental Education Officer, for consideration, particularly local businesses that work directly or indirectly with products or services with a maritime connection. Application forms and further details can be obtained from Claire Morgan by telephoning her on 01273 482653, by emailing her at or by visiting the website at www.eastsussexcc.gov.uk.
