Ye Olde Hair Problem
If somebody has long hair, and they keep it down, then it probably gets in their face when they are doing work. It gets hot when its down (spoken from experience) and it just gets plain bothersome. It is much easier to do your work when your hair is not getting in the way. People used to wear ribbons and rubber bands before hair ties were invented, but ribbons and rubber bands were not as effective as they could be. Ribbons slip out of your hair, and rubber bands pull clumps of hair out of your head.
Ribbons No More
The good solution was hair elastics. A hair elastic is an elastic (sort of like a rubber band) encased in woven cotton or polyester. They are really helpful at any time. Sara (a preschool teacher) says: “I think that I wear a hair tie every day, it keeps my hair out of my face while I work”. Scünci and Goody are a couple of very popular hair tie companies. They both have many different styles of hair ties (some are similar between the two companies). Jocelyn (a preschool teacher) says: “I like to wear hair ties, they are practical and they look good”.

It’s especially nice to have hair ties because then you don’t rip your hair out by trying to use a rubber band as a make shift hair tie. Nicole a 6th grade teacher says: “I use Scünci no metal, no slip hair ties”.
Tying it Up
Hair elastics are convenient, and you can choose which ones you like based on color, thickness, or whatever. Hair ties were invented in the 1800’s and since then have been evolving and getting better and better. I asked Tasha how long her hair elastics last and she said: “[They] usually last, if I’m using the same one over and over again, about 4-6 weeks. Then, I’ll lose them, they’ll get stretched out or break, and I’ll start the process over again.”
