Dear All,

My name is Bex Bebbington, I am a beginners agility instructor at Dig It DTC, and also a student at Keele University, studying Biology and Psychology. During the summer months of this year, I will be volunteering with Operation Wallacea for 6 weeks in Akumal, Mexico.

Operation Wallacea is a not for profit organisation that works to conserve endangered animals through academic research. Students such as myself, travel to sites across the world where they conduct research into protecting these endangered species. This research is important for us to be able to conserve them for future generations.

There are only seven species of Sea turtle in the world, all of which are either at risk of becoming, or are already endangered. Two of which can be found in Akumal, Mexico and are the species that I will be researching this summer.

I will spend my 6 weeks conducting observational research on sea turtle behaviour in Akumal. My research will focus on how tourism affects sea turtle behaviour, which will form the basis of my dissertation.

My life goal is to become a Biology teacher when I finish my degree, and believe that this opportunity will benefit both me and my future students greatly, by providing me with not only experience of working in the field, but also stories to inspire students. As sea turtles are an endangered species, about which little is understood, it is important that as much information is collected as possible, and I believe that my research will play a key part in the conservation of this species.

The total cost of this project is around £4500. I am running fundraising events within Dig It to help me to raise as much money as possible. Examples of which include; raffles and bake sales at the Dig It events (Sunday 4th May & Sunday 8th June) and a beginners games show (Monday 9th June).

Thank you in advance for your time, kind consideration, and assistance.

Bex Bebbington
