Inquiry Project: Protest Songs of the 1960’s and 70’s /

Introduction

This is a research project where the student will examine the social impact of the Cold War in connection to the chapter: Challenges to Liberalism Related to Foreign Policy: in relation to the 1960s Protest Music.

Overview

The inquiry project is essay format and will be submitted to the teacher on Friday, April 21st, 2017:

SWBAT:

·  Understand and make an informed opinion on:

o  2.10 analyze how ideological conflict shaped international relations after the Second World War (expansionism, containment, deterrence, brinkmanship, détente, nonalignment, liberation movements)

o  Ways that this ideological conflict of ideologies affected societies and people’s everyday lives.

Part A

·  Select two of the songs (from the list below or of your own choosing)

·  Provide a copy of the lyrics for the song (The artists name is given)

·  Identify the song writer (not always the same as the artist/singer) and the year it was written

·  What was the song’s peak position on the Billboard charts? In what year?

·  Answer: Is there any particular event the song is protesting, or is it a general protest against American policies? How do you know that? (What is it protesting?)

·  Answer: In general, what aspect(s) of liberalism does this song seem to suggest is/are lacking in society?
