Dear Friends, October 2017
Friends of Croome Annual Holiday, 2018
After much searching by Just Go Holidays and the events team we have unfortunately had no luck in finding a suitable hotel in Kent. We have therefore decided to put the visit to Kent on hold until 2019 when we will be able to make an earlier start with hotel bookings.
However, on an exciting note we have booked the Grosvenor Hotel in Torquay from Sunday 20th - Thursday 24th May 2018. This is anewly refurbished hotel offing excellent food and has 4-star reviews. John Burton-Race the former Michelin starred chef and of TV fame heads the restaurant. The hotel is 2 minutes from the beach and overlooks lovely gardens with views to the sea.
The itinerary is still to be finalised, but what we have in mind at the moment is as follows:
Sunday Powderham Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Devon and
their children. They bear the illustrious Courtenay name, a family line that stretches backover 1,000 years, most of which time has been spent in Devon.
Monday NT Greenways, Agatha Christie’s home. Travelling from Dartmouth by boat.
Boat back to Dartmouth with free time for exploring.
Tuesday Plymouth Maritime Centre with guided visit to HMS Courageous a decommissioned
nuclear submarine and other attractions, followed by free time from Plymouth Hoe. Lots to explore e.g. Mayflower museum, National Marine Aquarium, Royal Citadel, as well as the chance to enjoy the history and atmosphere of the old streets and buildings.
Wednesday A gentler day today with a visit to NT Overbecks. Overbecks is an exotic
and fascinating hidden paradise perched high on the cliffs aboveSalcombe. It has stunning views over the inlet. It was the seaside home of scientist and inventor Otto Overbecks. Free time to explore Salcombe before a wine tasting on the way back to ourhotel.
Thursday Returning home via Castle Drogo. This was built from 1911 to 1930 for Julius Drewe to designs by architect Edwin Lutyens, and is a Grade I listed building.
The cost of the holiday has yet to be finalised but should be no more than £420 per person, whichwill include entrance fees to Powderham, Plymouth Maritime Centre, the boat trip, wine tasting and a tip for the coach driver. There is no single supplement.
Unfortunately the hotel has no lift, we understand from the hotel that they will do their best to accommodate people if they would like a room on a lower floor.
We very much hope that you would like to join us on what we hope will be a very
interesting and varied holiday, with something for everyone.
