SUBJECT: District Awards Chair 2010-11

The Awards Committee of District 5790, chaired by Janelle Kavanaugh, consists of Lis Ann Peters, Peggy Sonnenberg, Rod Brennan, and Bryan Stewart. District Awards will be presented at the District Conference. Judges for the awards will be the Committee, unless otherwise indicated. The ultimate goal shall be to strengthen the individual clubs and to improve the quality of Rotary activities.

The purpose of the awards shall be:

  1. To publicly recognize and reward outstanding service to District 5790 and to Rotary in general;
  2. To recognize and reward all types of outstanding service to both clubs and individuals; and
  3. To encourage and motivate future service.

All information is based on the period beginning July 1, 2010 through March 31, 2011, unless a project is still in progress or otherwise indicated. If the project is in progress, the club must indicate the phase of the project and estimated completion date. If the project is a carryover from a previous Rotary year, the club must indicate work completed in that previous year, the work completed in the present year, and the estimated completion date.

Included in this document are the three types of awards, District Awards, Rotary International (RI) Awards, and Rotary Foundation Awards, which provide specific guidelines for eligibility in any of the categories shown. They are described in the following pages. Awards will be given for any program deemed to be innovative or to hold special significance for a Club.

DISTRICT AWARDS

Most District Awards will be given based on club size, small, medium or large (per theattached list).

OUTSTANDING CLUB

Based on all of the awards and accomplishments of individual clubs, the Awards Committee in coordination with the DG will select an outstanding club in each of the three categories.

THE GOVERNOR'S CUP

This award will be a Loving Cup to be given to the outstanding Club in the District during the year. The club will be selected from one of the three Outstanding Clubs noted above. The club's name will be engraved on the cup and that cup will be passed on to future recipients. A plaque will be awarded to the Club to remain in the Club's possession. The Governor will select the recipient based on information included in the entries for the other awards as well as other information about the Club. Only one Governor's Cup will be awarded, regardless of club size.

OUTSTANDING ROTARIANS AND ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR

An "Outstanding Rotarian" will be selected based on Club size. The District Rotarian of the Year will be selected from one of the three Outstanding Rotarians. The enclosed form will be used for the nomination. If a Club wishes to nominate a Rotarian outside its own Club, it must have the permission of the nominee's Club. The award will be a plaque given to the individual. The DG, DGE, DGN, and Past District Governors are not eligible for these awards.

AVENUE OF SERVICE AWARDS

Each of the following awards will be given to the top club in each group, and all submissions will be recognized.

  3. Community Service
  4. International Service

The forms in this Section shall be used to submit information concerning the Clubs in these fourareas.

MEMBERSHIP AWARDS

Because membership is such a vital part of every club, Membership Awards will continue to recognize those clubs that excel in recruiting and retaining membersFollowing is a brief explanation of the awards. Included in this package are the applicable nomination forms. All of these awards and nomination forms are also on the RI website.

All nominations are due by March 31, 2011, unless otherwise noted in the nomination form and should be mailed to the District Awards Chair.

MEMBERSHIP AND EXTENSION AWARDS

There are four different awards in this category, and on the District level they will be awarded to the top 3 clubs in each of the three categories (small, medium and large clubs). These awards will be based on information in the RI records, so it is very important that your secretary keeps these records current.

Overall Growth: The club with the highest percentage growth rate. This will be based on membership as of July 1, 2010, and March 31, 2011.

Recruitment: The club with the most new members inducted.

Retention: The club with the highest percentage retention rate. This is the percentage of members as of July 1, 2010, who are still members on March 31, 2011. This will not include any new members inducted after July 1,2010. These percentages will be furnished to the District Awards Chair by the individual clubs.

New Clubs: This will recognize any club that sponsored a new club during the Rotary year.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AWARDS

RI RECOGNITION OF MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

RI recognizes clubs that develop and implement creative strategies that have a positive impact on membership in their area. We will submit the top candidate in each of the three categories, small, medium, and large club. The details of this award may be found on the Rotary International website, THE DUE DATE FOR CLUBS TO SUBMIT THIS FORM TO THE DISTRICT AWARDS CHAIR IS MARCH 31, 2011.In addition to the certificate from RI, the clubs will be recognized at the RI Convention and announced in the Rotary World Magazine Press. (Note: The District can submit three clubs. In the event no club in one category submits a nomination, we will submit two from the same category).

RI RECOGNITION OF SMALLER CLUBS MEMBERSHIP GROWTH

This RI award recognizes growth in clubs that may have fallen below the club charter requirement of 20 members. The details of the award and submission form may be found on the Rotary International website,

FOUNDATION SUPPORT AWARD

One award will be given to a Club based upon per capita giving plus percent of members who are Benefactors. This information will be verified with Rotary International records before the award is made.

PRESIDENTIAL CITATION AND ROTARACT / INTERACT PRESIDENTIAL CITATION. From the RI Home Page, click on the "members" tab at the top of the page, then on the "general information" tab at the top of the screen, and finally click on "awards" on the left hand drop down menu. Both the Presidential Citation and the Rotaract Citation have to go through the DG, and they are due by March 15, 2011. To earn the Presidential Citation, a club must have a net increase of one member and accomplish one activity from all six of the categories listed in the brochure.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AWARDS (cont’d)

BEST COOPERATIVE PROJECTS AWARD recognizes clubs that conduct outstanding projects in cooperation with other organizations. For example, a club could cooperate with a health clinic to provide free vaccinations, or with a local Boy Scout Troop on a community project. The application for this award must be received by the DG by March 15, 2011.

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD is a certificate that a local club can confer on either individuals or organizations for outstanding service to families and communities. This award is a good opportunity for clubs to celebrate Family Month in December, recognize members of the Family of Rotary, and promote Rotary in the community. Certificates are available for sale in lots of 10.

FOUR AVENUES OF SERVICE CITATION FOR INDIVIDUAL ROTARIANS is a means for clubs to recognize one member of their club for outstanding efforts in all avenues of service. Each club can nominate one member per year. The nomination form goes directly to RI Headquarters, with a copy to the DG. This is an on-going award; there is no specific due date.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD recognizes 150 Rotarians a year who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service at any level. The DG, PDG, and DGE are not eligible to receive this award. This award must be submitted by the DG, PDG or RI directors. The deadline for this submission isSeptember 1, 2010; if you intend to nominate someone, please notify DGPaulso we can assist with the nomination.

SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD recognizes clubs for outstanding community service projects. Clubs submit their applications to the DG who will select one to forward to RI. This application should be received no later than March 1, 2011,so it can be presented at the District Conference.

ROTARY FOUNDATION AWARDS

There are several awards through the RF that recognize individual Rotarians for exemplary service. Following is a list of the awards, but before nominating anyone, please either contact Janelle or go to the RI/RF website and become familiar with the award criteria.

AWARD FOR A POLIO-FREE WORLD recognizes Rotarians for personal service, not financial contributions.

CITATION FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE must be submitted by the DG by May 15, 2011.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD is only given four years after receiving Citation for Meritorious Service, and since we don't have one of those we are not eligible to submit this award.

GLOBAL ALUMNI SERVICE TO HUMANITY AWARD honors outstanding alumni who have contributed to greater understanding and peace through service to humanity, and whose significant achievements have either enriched their profession or vocation.
