Math Competency

There was lengthy discussion regarding the document presented for approval. In particular, concern was expressed for vocational education students, etc. math for engineering and math for air conditioning. Why are we insisting upon a certain way, when state law provides a broader scope of doing this? Also discussed was acceptance of IB Exam scores when the district has not adopted a policy on accepting these exams.

INFORMATION/DISCUSSION

Articulation

Shannon advised that she received a letter from Bob Quinn, CCC Chancellor’s Office Articulation and Transfer Coordinator. The letter said “The CCC Articulation Officers Regional Representatives recommend that references to the CAN system and the identification that courses qualified for CAN beeliminated from all college print and electronic publications.” so we will be removing all references to CAN from next year’s catalog. When asked about C-ID (Course Identification) which is the latest attempt at common course numbering, Shannon responded that it is still in the development process and won’t be ready for some time.

DTRW Report

Copies of changes to the Golden Rule, agreed upon at the December 18, 2008 and January 22, 2009 DTRW meetings, had been sent to committee members previously. One question that came up was whether a field trip abroad would trigger DTRW review?

Reading Competency

Reading competency was part of graduation requirements in the past but was eliminated. Gwen advised that the Student Success Committee would be interested in looking at data to support the need. After discussion it was agreed that Gwen will put out a call under Basic Skills asking for volunteers to participate in a task force to work on this issue.

Review of Course Submittal Procedure AGAIN

Betty reviewed the course submittal process and reminded committee members that courses must complete technical, articulation, and SLO review, and revised documents and a signed hard copy must be received, before a course can be placed on the agenda for First Reading.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 3:55p.m.

Notes

Shannon Ordonez will be the point person to track program changes. Faculty need to submit the state paperwork directly to Shannon, she will forward it to the Chancellor’s Office and track the process, approval, and that it is correct on the State Inventory of Programs List.
