Build your Own Government

Directions: You and your best friends have discovered an island in the Pacific Ocean. Excitement over your discovery has spread and people have rushed to buy land in your newly formed country. In order to provide civilians with structure and equality, you have decided to establish a Democratic Republic similar to that of the United States. Your job is to develop your government following the requirements below and create a poster board depicting all of the information required.

Requirements:

1.  Name: You must name your country.

2.  Flag: Create a colorful flag for your country (must use symbolism to show what your country stands for/believes in).

3.  Constitution: Write a Constitution that includes a Preamble written in your own words and a Bill of Rights with ten major rights of your citizens (and an explanation of WHY you’re guaranteeing these rights). Be creative!

4.  Exports: What are three major exports (items found in your country and sold to other countries)?

5.  Federalism: You have decided to have a National government and State governments. Discuss how you plan to split the government. Will the National government be large or small? How much power will states have? Provide a list of powers given to your National government and powers given to your State governments and explain the benefits of your decision.

6.  Three branches of government: You’ve decided to use the same three branches as the U.S. In your own words, describe what they are, what their purpose is, and who serves in each branch.

  1. Who are some of your most popular Senators, Representatives, and Supreme Court justices?

7.  First presidential election: Select any four major political parties that have existed in the United States in the past 220 years (give a brief description of each party on your poster) and four candidates to represent each party (can be celebrities, politicians, or friends, but you need a picture of them for your poster board).

8.  Presidential election poll: Ask 50 people (students, teachers, parents, and others) who they would elect as president out of your four candidates and create a pie chart depicting your results.

9.  Culture: Provide pictures of various items showing your country’s culture such as:

  1. What types of food do people in your country eat?
  2. What types of entertainment do your people enjoy?
  3. What holidays do you people practice?
  4. What is your country’s bird?
  5. What is your country’s flower?
  6. What else is your country known for?

Grading:

·  General Requirements (10 points): Did you include every requirement and follow the directions for each requirement?

·  Neatness (10 points): Is your poster board neat, easy to read, and well designed?

·  Creativity (10 points): Are all of your ideas creative and imaginative?

·  Accuracy (20 points): Is your information about the three branches of government and political parties accurate?

·  Spelling/Grammar (10 points): Did you spell everything correct, use complete sentences in your Constitution, and follow standard grammar?
