I Believe That Teachers Should Assign Homework
What if there was no such thing as homework? How would we be able to do things that we are able to do now? We may as well just destroy our way of living. Many people want homework to be banned but haven’t realized these consequences could happen. However, some believe that homework should be assigned. I believe should be assigned homework.
Many people believe students should not be given homework (mostly students). In the article “Does Homework Help Make the Grade?” the author tells us that homework can kill a child’s interest in a certain subject. If they lose interest in that subject, they may fail. What’s even worse? Well, the article “The Case Against Homework” states that some students cry nightly, have stomach aches, and even get facial tics from too much homework! That seems a bit absurd to me. The article also says that there is no proof that homework improves learning, which is also very absurd. In the article “Homework Helps Students Succeed In School”, the author contends that too much homework can be counterproductive (negative).
Although some of the statements in the paragraph above do make some good points, I disagree with a few of them. First off, homework DOES improve learning. Why, look how intelligent you are now. Didn’t homework help you along the way? Homework doesn’t always kill a child’s interest in a subject either. For example, consider a child likes math but gets tough homework from her teacher. Instead of her losing interest in math, her homework may only strengthen her passion for that subject.
Although many people want homework to be banned, many disagree. The article “Let’s Do Homework!” points out that homework can help improve attitudes, help children learn, and students who do their homework do better in school! Isn’t that great? Homework also helps students develop academic achievement as the article “Does Homework Help Students Make the Grade?” points out. Homework is also very critical to learning too which the article “Homework Helps Students Succeed In School” notes. The article also suggests the “ten minute rule”. The rule says to multiply your grade by ten minutes to find the right amount of homework and time you spend on it. So third grade gets thirty minutes, fourth grade gets forty minutes, and fifth grade gets fifty minutes.
In my opinion, I believe students should be assigned homework, as long as there isn’t too much. Too much homework isn’t very good and too little isn’t very good either, so right between the two sounds best. If we don’t get homework, we might fall even farther behind other countries. I know we wouldn’t like that, now would we? Also, rather than 15-20 pages given out for homework, 3-7 pages sounds like a fair amount in my opinion.
With homework, we are able to learn more. Why take that away from us?
