Bibliometric Workshop Hands-On: Using Incites Benchmark & Analyticsto provide citation based evidence for Research Evaluation

Objectives

  • Run the reports you feel will provide the necessary data for the requests below.
  • Present the data in a suitable visualization.

(1.a)Theme: Collaboration Analysis

Context: The International Relations Office at Imperial College London needs to retrieve information from Incites that will assist Imperial in better understanding its collaboration profile. Use Incites B&A to answer the following:

a)The IRO wants to wants to identify the institutions and countries which collaborate with Imperialauthors over the last 10 years. They want to understandthe historical trends of these collaborations.

b)The IRO wants to ascertain who are the authors at Imperialcollaborating with Mexico in the field of Infectious Diseases. The IRO wants to obtain the names of the Imperial authors who collaborate with Mexico and also identify the names and institutions of the collaborating authors in Mexico.

Context: The Research Office at Imperial College wants to strengthen their collaborations with industry (corporate).

c)Imperial wants to know which are the existing collaborations with industry (corporate) from the latest 10 years and identify which collaborations are providing a return on investment and which are not. (Tip:Which indicator best measures performance (ROI)?

d)Imperial want to identify new industry collaboration opportunities in the field of ‘Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’. How can Imperial determine which collaborations are more likely to provide a return on investment?

(2.b)Theme: Funding Analysis

Context: The Research Office at Imperial College wants to better understand the current funding landscape and identify new funding opportunities.

a)Imperial wants to identify the Funding Bodies that currently fund their research. Which Funding Agency has funded the most research? What evidence can Imperial provideto the Funding Agency to demonstrate that it is receiving return on investment?

b)Imperial wants to identify new funding opportunities in the field of Immunology. Name 5 new Funders (Funding Agency) they should explore and how can they identify which ones to be prioritized?

(2.c) Theme: Open Access Analysis

Context: The Research Office at Imperial College wants to track the publication of research in Open Access journals.

a)The RO office needs to obtain the publication trend of its research in OA journals in the last 10 years.

b)The RO office needs to obtain the list of OA journals in which Imperial authors publish.

3) Theme: Author metrics & ORCID Adoption

Context: The Research Office is considering the recruitment of two new members of academic staff in the area of Molecular Biology & Genetics to form a research group led by Dr. Inga Prokopenko. The RO is considering the following 2016 highly cited researchers (for the full list of 2016 Highly Cited Researchers, see

FIRST NAME / LAST NAME / ORCID / RESEARCHERID / PRIMARY AFFILIATION
Inga / Prokopenko / 0000-0003-1624-7457 / H-3241-2014 / Imperial Coll London, UK
James F / Wilson / 0000-0001-5751-9178 / A-5704-2009 / Univ Edinburgh, UK
Colin / Palmer / 0000-0002-6415-6560 / C-7053-2008 / Univ Dundee, UK

a)Create a “hypothetical research group” consisting of the three researchers above, based on papers published in 2010-2015, using their ORCID identifiers. (Tip you will need to search for all 3 ORCIDS in the People Module and ‘pin’ the results to the top then create a benchmark for the Pinned items)

  1. How can you assess the researchperformance of the Research Group? Why indicators will you use and why? Create a bar graph presenting the CNCI that includes all 4 values (3 ORCID’s plus Pinned Items baseline). Save the graph to your Dashboard.

(Tip: Go to People Module and select Unique Identifiers: ORCID. Remember to create a Benchmark including all authors. Remember, access all your saved reports under My Folders which is found in Analytics tab).

b)Create a Researcher Report of the “hypothetical” research group and share it with the RO by email. (Tip: Go to InCites Systems Report > Researcher Report)

4) Theme: Customized datasets - Create a query in WoS Core Collection and Save to InCites

Context: One of the strategic research areas for Imperial College, in terms of producing groundbreaking research and world-changing collaborations,isDark Matter/Dark Energy in Fundamental Physics.(

Insert the following query in the Topic Search Field:

“Dark Matter” or “Dark Energy”(Time period 1980-2016)

Run the search andsave the results to InCites. (Tip: can create any topic search that is a strategic research area for your institution)

a)Open your customized dataset in InCites. Which UK institutions produce the most papers over the past 5 years? (Tip: Trend graph)

b)Which institutions do you consider are the best performing in this topic? What evidence are you basing your decision on?

c)Which institution has produced the highest number of Highly Cited Papers? Which are the top 5 institutions which have the highest number of international co authored papers?

d)Name the top 5 fundingsources in the area of Dark Matter? (Tip: Funding Agencies Module)
