1.  Note evidence/examples of the three main ideas of the Cell Theory:

a.  “Life is made of cells”

b.  Smallest unit of life is a cell

c.  Cells come from cells

2.  Comment on the appropriateness of the following terms: “animacules” (unicellular or multicellular?) “cell” (based on what familiar structure?) “globules” (how does this relate to what we know about red blood cells?)

3.  What is the basis for the difference in power between Van Leuwenhoek’s and Hooke’s microscopes?

4.  Consider the question of what limits advancement – the technology to collect data or the interpretation of data?

5.  What evidence arose for the universal nature of the cell - what internal structure was seen in many plants as well as in animal tissues?

6.  Looking at one of our lab microscope, identify the objective and the ocular lenses – the two lenses put in sequence by Lister.

7.  Consider how the cell served as a unifying principle, connecting “fibers”, “globules”, “granules”, “bladders”. How is one descriptive term more accurate than all of the previous separate terms?

8.  Restating the Cell Theory…”Where there is life, there are cells” and “Organisms are cooperatives of cells”…how was the third idea of the cell theory still inaccurate?

9.  Explain how Pasteur’s experiment provides negative evidence against the spontaneous generation hypothesis.

10.  What specific process was observed by Remak? How does this provide positive evidence against spontaneous generation?

11.  Explain the connection between the cell theory and evolution.

12.  But WHY are cells essential to life? STAY TUNED!!!
