Counselor Education Department Meeting
1/26/12
9:45 – 11:30 AM
In attendance: Brenda O’Beirne, Anene Okocha, David Van Doren, Krista Kim, Amber Schoepke, and Don Norman (recording); Cindy Anderton excused (with our best thoughts for her family).
- Approval of 1/19/12 minutes on a Kim/Okocha motion, 2nd; all approved.
- Additions to agenda.
- Discussion of new faculty position description and S&S process. List of characteristics/needs relative to position: Community emphasis, technology, Spanishspeaking ability (preferred not required), leadership skills, knowledge of CACREP process and standards, and MFT background (preferred not required). The S&S process was further clarified relative to the new position.
- Fall 2012 Schedule discussion. Due date 2/8/12. The tentative schedule will be back next week. 3002 will not be scheduled for the primary classroom, this relative to scheduling practicum counseling office space.
- Transition to 60-credit program. Discussion lead by David relative to a template developed to facilitate our discussion on the transition. Reference was made to the MHC 2009 CACREP standards and how to fit MHC curriculum into current/developing MHC UWW program. Cindy has offered to review MHC CACREP standards relative to identifying “holes” in our current community counseling curriculum. Question: What does it mean to integrate these standards into our program? Course objects, tentative schedule, listing of class topics in syllabi would provide proof of covering MHC standards. Other considerations: reconstructing 751, moving consultation out to a school counseling emphasis only. Exploration of the Ed. Specialist degree continues. It will be important to keep in mind maintaining a community counseling degree along side of the 60 credit hour MHC degree. Numerous issues surfaced relative to student choices regarding a 48 credit program vs. 60 credit program. Return to this discussion on 2/9.
