EXPERTISE

Since 1995, I have been working as a freelance ecological consultant for a wide variety of clients, includingNatural England, the National Trust, Crown Estates, County Trusts, Butterfly Conservation, the Ministry of Defence, Royal Parks, andmany County and District Councils, as well as the Environment Agency and Thames Water, etc.

Ecology and Invertebrate Surveys

The services I provide range from baseline surveys (specialising in invertebrates) & Phase 1 and 2 habitat surveys, to detailed EIAs, and specialist management plans for endangered habitats and species, especially in wetlands (including river corridor surveys, Crayfish surveys etc.), heathlands, and old woodlands.

I have over two decades experience with herpetological surveys and where necessary I have conducted licensed rescue and translocation schemes for protected species including Natterjack Toads, Great Crested Newts, and reptiles including Slow Worms, Common Lizards, Grass Snakes & Adders. Over the past 25 years I have been one of the most active herpetologists in Britain, clocking up over 23,000 hours in the field.

I have supervised and in many cases single-handedly created /restored over sixty ponds, and have considerable expertise with establishing native plants and animals. Examples include new ponds for Great Crested Newts in the Botanical Gardens at University of Southampton, and over 20 ponds on Woolmer Forest in Hampshire.

I have had over 250 papers and notes published on the biology and distribution of invertebrates in Britain and abroad, and I am the County recorder for spiders, harvestmen, pseudoscorpions, beetles, bugs, hoppers and River-flies in Surrey and Hampshire, and National recorder for the Tenebrionoidea (darkling beetles & allied families), Scirtidae (Marsh beetles) and Steninae (Camphor beetles). I have carried out over 280 detailed baseline invertebrate surveys of sites across England and Wales (See below), covering all the key habitat types. In 2003, I carried out one of the largest scale invertebrate surveys ever commissioned in Britain, recording over 3200 taxa, and generating over 15,000 records, from the Kennet Valley in Berkshire. I have identified some of the most important sites for Dead-wood Coleoptera in Britain, and carried out countywide surveys of wetland habitats in both North Hampshire and Surrey.

In 2009-10 I surveyed all the key Saltmarsh SSSIs in Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex for NE, and numerous Acid Mire and Fen, and Ancient Woodland communities on a dozen further classic localities in the region as part of the ISIS programme.

I also work on the taxonomy and ecology of aquatic Coleoptera in Cameroon, and South America.

I have also carried out contracts for NE/RSPB studying the Spangled Water beetle Graphoderus zonatus, the diving beetle Agabus brunneus and the Ground Beetle Lebia cyanocephala, three of the most localised and endangered insects in the UK. I also carried out the Recovery Scheme pilot work for the reed beetle Donacia bicolora, the Hornet Robberfly Asilus crabroniformis, & the Gilkicker Weevil Pachytychius haematocephalus. I remain the only ecologist who has carried out both vertebrate and invertebrate Species Recovery schemes.

I also carry out ornithological surveys (for breeding and wintering birds), including pioneering studies of impact on birds of construction of bridge crossings. Specialist surveys of impacts of piling works on Brent Geese in Langstone harbour.

I have travelled widely across all the continents, where I have seen over 42% of the world‘s avifauna.

I also do many mammal surveys, and in the past few years I have found important new populations of Water Voles in Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey. I also carry out licensed Dormice survey work, and have considerable experience in small mammal trapping work especially in search of Harvest Mice and Water Shrew. I have carried out many bat surveys across England and Wales and found several important new roosts. I am also an experienced Otter surveyor.

I am an experienced botanist familiar with most of the British Vascular flora, and have experience of the NVC system, especially on dunes, heaths and woodlands.

I recently completed books on the Beetles of Surrey, which is the longest county checklist ever published on a single order in Britain, and on the Water Bugs and Beetles of Surrey in the famed Surrey Atlas series, with further tomes on the Spiders, Bugs & Hoppers, Riverflies and Freshwater Fish in prep. Also completed the True Bug - Heteroptera section of the DEFRA Priority habitats invertebrate project for Buglife.

I am also a widely publishedwildlife photographer and illustrator specialising in aquatic and wetland invertebrates, and have a huge portfolio of images of over 3000 species of British Invertebrates. My photos have appeared in publications including British Wildlife,Surrey Natureand Sanctuary.

I am the first naturalist to record over 11,000 taxa from all groups in the British Isles, and Britain’s leading pan-species lister with 11301 to date!

Previous work

In 1986 I carried out one of the largest County-wide surveys for Great Crested Newts, using a British Ecological Society grant I surveyed over 300 ponds in Cumbria. The results were published in the Herpetological Journal in 1991. In 1988 I undertook a 3 year contract from the Nature Conservancy Council, and completed a part time PhD on the ecology of our two native toad species. This involved the use of many techniques including radio-telemetry, on habitats including saltmarsh, sand-dunes and heathland sites. In 1991 I worked for the Durrell Institute for Conservation and Ecology at The University of Kent.

I was able to put my findings into practice as English Nature’s Species Recovery Officer for the Natterjack toad from 1991-95. I initially surveyed all the former sites, selecting those with potential for reintroduction schemes. I produced management plans and in many cases prepared the sites for and carried out the introductions. As a result, populations have been successfully established in Berkshire, Dorset, Lincs, Norfolk, Suffolk, Surrey, and Wales.

A large part of my work involved the writing and production of management plans, and I also co-authored the Natterjack Toad Management Handbook for EN.

I continued my research into the ecology of the Natterjack throughout this time, and most of my findings have been published in various journals including;- Amphibia-Reptilia, Biological Conservation, Ecography, Journal of Animal Ecology, Journal of Zoology, and Oecologia.
