STUDENT ASSIGNMENT POLICY

CRITERIA for Student assignment to classes and programs

The principal (or principal’s designee) will assign students to classes and programs in a manner that will:

1. Take each student’s developmental needs into account.

2. Create collaborative groups of teachers responsible for the same students and with common planning time so that together, they can work as a team to meet individual student needs.

3. Facilitate the Implementation of our School Improvement Plan.

4. Support the goal of not exceeding the state class size cap except under the following circumstances:

Temporary exceptions in order to provide an appropriate assignment to a student newly enrolled in the school.

Permanent exceptions made after meeting with all the teachers for the appropriate student level and topics to discuss student needs and possible solutions and after determining that no reasonable alternative will meet the student’s needs.

Primary assignments (ELEMENTARY)

In May, the primary teachers will meet together to recommended class groupings for the next year by completing Student Placement Forms for current students and any available data on pre-registered new students. The student placement forms shall include recommendations that fit the standards for student assignment listed above and also ensure multi-ability homerooms. The principal and counselor shall discuss the placement forms and recommendations with those teachers, being sure to understand any special concerns about individual student needs. Each grouping will include students performing at a variety of levels. No student will be placed in a group or kept out of a group based on age. Individual students will be placed to help each one make continuous progress. When making placements, state recommended guidelines and assessments will be considered.

In July, the principal (or principal’s designee) will consider those recommendations before making final assignments of current students and will also assign students who enter the school after the recommendations are complete.

Within 7 days of the start of the school year, the principal shall decide on the final student assignments and make class placements available by phone if a series of identifying questions can be answered by the parent. Due to confidentiality concerns, class lists are no longer posted in the school’s foyer. Parents may also be notified on the day of the annual Back to School Bash that occurs before the first day of school.

Intermediate assignments (ELEMENTARY)

In May, teachers in each grade will meet to recommend groups for their students for the next school year. The recommendations will fit the standards for student assignment listed in the first section of this policy and also ensure multi-ability classrooms. The principal (or principal’s designee) will assign students who enter the school after the recommendations are complete.

The principal (or principal’s designee) will decide on final assignments for the next year and parents will be notified in the same manner cited above. The decisions will meet the criteria for student assignment listed in the first section of this policy, provide multi-ability classrooms, and give thoughtful consideration to the recommendations made by the teachers.

Exemption Clause

During the first two weeks of school, any student’s homeroom placement may be changed for purposes including, but not limited to, support schedules, student or teacher personality conflicts, or other reasons deemed acceptable by the principal. In the event that this occurs, the parents of the student shall be notified of this change prior to occurrence.

POLICY EVALUATION

We will evaluate the effectiveness of this policy through our School Improvement Planning Process.
