AVID College Research Project
Part of the AVID programs is to help students become familiar with colleges and universities. This is your first step! This project is a major part of your grade.
You will choose one school to research using californiacolleges.edu. We will use class time to find information on the internet about your school as well as to work on your project. Keep in mind that you may need time outside of school to complete your project too. You will be responsible for collecting the information in order to complete the items below. No duplicates of schools will be allowed.
Your project will include:
- Cornell notes of your research
- an original banner with the required elements
- an oral presentation
ALL OF THE ABOVE ITEMS WILL BE DUE ON THE DAY OF YOUR PRESENTATION.
You will be graded on completion of all the elements above including:
-spelling & grammar
-neatness
-creativity
-presentation of materials/information
-accuracy
Information you must have about your college in your banner and your presentation:
1. Visual Elements – graphic of name of college, graphic of logo, graphic of mascot, 1-2 photos of the campus. Use school colors in creating the banner.
2. Basic Information –
a. Location: city, state.
b. Type of school: Public vs private, UC vs Cal state, special college?
c. Student body: # of students, % of male/female, % of different ethnicities
d. Cost: tuition (sem vs qtr), fees, room & board, food, other costs. Calculate per year.
e. Contact information: address, phone number, email, website.
3. For Admission –
a. Minimum high school course requirements
b. Minimum GPA
c. Minimum SAT /ACT scores
d. # of applications submitted each year, # of applications accepted, % accepted
e. Financial Aid: types offered, such as scholarships, grants, loans, etc.
4. College Life –
a. What is the history of the school? What traditions do they have?
b. Top 10 majors
c. Top 6 sports programs(3 male and 3 female)
d. Top 5 clubs/programs
e. What is unique or special about this college?
Bonus - interview somebody who graduated from your school. Develop questionnaire. Conduct interview. Type questions with the responses. Include in your presentation.
