NOTICE:

·  Students entering the 4th grade in Fall 2011 have the option of attending one or both of the primary programs and/or taking courses on the Baylor campus.

·  Parents of younger students will want to carefully consider the locations of the courses on campus and be comfortable with students transitioning between locations.

·  An automatic $20.00 registration fee will be assessed for each participant. This fee covers the cost of the registration process.

·  Each UYP participant will receive the official UYP t-shirt for 2011.

·  Supplies listed under individual courses are to be provided by the students.

·  If you do not wish to receive the UYP catalog any longer, please inform the CCLE office by e-mailing to be removed from mailing list. Include UYP student’s full name and parent(s) name.

Gayla Reid / Creative Problem Solving Camp: Explorations
Participants will use creative problem solving as they explore the remains of a vanished culture in a simulation of an archaeology dig. Expert groups will employ the disciplines of anthropology, museum studies, history, art, science, and journalism to unravel the mysteries of a long-forgotten people and communicate their discoveries to others. The week culminates in a showcase of the activities, skills, discoveries, and products explored and developed by the children.

Explore paths in a Texas-geography themed outdoor learning environment through various perspectives such as following the path of surface water and underground water; drawing a journey through the regions of Texas; tracing the migrations of hummingbirds and monarchs; writing poetry; and tracing human settlement patterns. Activities will culminate with a final product. Parents are welcome to attend the final showcase of the students' activities and products.

Through games, storytelling, and acting, you will be introduced to Shakespeare and the magical world of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You will be quoting Shakespeare by the end of class and will have an early appreciation for the Bard!

What do people do for fun in China? What do they eat in Beijing, Hong Kong, or Chengdu? What dialect of Chinese should I learn? Come experience for yourself the language, the food and the favorite pastimes of the Chinese people. Learn how to play Jianzi (Chinese hacky sacks), make Jiaozi (Chinese dumplings), greet one another in Putonghua (Mandarin), write Chinese characters, and a lot more!

If a picture paints a thousand words, what story comes to your mind when you see Claude Monet’s Poppies? What do you think Mona Lisa was thinking? What did Picasso’s Three Musicians sound like? In this course, you will observe and analyze works of visual art and compose your own stories about them. You will begin to understand how the use of colorful vocabulary and descriptive language can “paint” a picture in your mind. You will have the opportunity to create you own piece of visual art and write an imaginative story about it.

Join us as we take a trip through the incredible human body! Come make your own cell model, experiment to see how your intestines really work, examine a human heart, and make an edible one. Learn the different parts of your brain, and see a real human one. WOW! We will even make a 2-D replica of all the major body systems. You will come out of this class knowing more about your “insides” than you do your outsides! Special note…in this class students will have the opportunity to taste various foods. Please let UYP know of any food allergies your child may have.

You will develop an immediate relationship with the stage and with an audience in this class. There will be a strong focus on increasing your sense of play, the generation of new material, and being physically precise yet blundering emotionally. Class will consist of exercises and mimetic techniques, clown improvisation, and stage presence. You will be exposed to pantomime, clowning skills, physical comedy, juggling, developing your own unique character and beginning aerobatics.

We will use our own great city of Waco, Texas, the county seat of McLennan County, as the inspiration for Draw the Town, Paint the Town! Using visuals from Waco and other sources, you will sketch, draw, paint, and create your own representations of various aspects of Waco, which we will combine to form a mural that will be displayed for all to see! We will also view works of art around the Baylor campus to gain understanding of the concept of a mural and explore art museums around campus!
