Program Overview – FNEP (Family Nutrition Education Programs)

Slide presentation. Content: Nutritional quality, Food safety, Food availability, Physical activity

FNP is associated with SNAP funding

EFNEP works in the home on home economics

Staff of nearly 30 engaged in these programs full-time.

Partners with MU Extension program Eating from the Garden

Discussion on the health of school food.

Food Waste as a federal priority, especially among USDA and EPA, as an opportunity for Extension

The legal implications of providing food to schools, as a barrier to smaller producers.

Reports

Treasurer’s Report – Judy Qualkinbush, Treasurer –

Report filed. Finance on track with prior year.

Regional Council Report – Rich Boulton/Valencia Broadus, Urban West Regional Council Representative

Meeting held on Oct 19. Reviewed new hires across the region. A meeting on Nov 7 will consider open positions. Dr. Stewart is seeking a list of people to follow up with following listening sessions. County report of MOU with Master Gardeners, and consideration of who pays for providing accessibility (reasonable accommodation). The feedback is that the host organization should be responsible.

State Council Report – Allen Garner, Urban West Regional Council Representative

Meeting held on Oct 27. Meeting noted that 40 $5k scholarships are newly available from MU for university enrollment for study in dairy agriculture. Regan Bluel, Barry Co. specialist, is POC. Dr. Stewart attended, and discussed a campaign involving quantitative, qualitative, and outside analysis of Extension, in addition to listening sessions and interest in conversations with community leaders and potential partners. Council considered the value of communicating with government at more levels. Council considered ADA and reasonable accommodation. State revenue is below targets, although it is up, and the budget implications are unknown for higher education. Council discussed MU Extension partnership with Lincoln University Extension, in addition to increased partnerships across MU departments. Council reviewed the 2016 MU Extension Organizational Review, an MU Extension informational folder, and new Land Grant informational video. Southeast region is producing good material for county Council training. Next meeting at the Missouri Association of Counties conference. No meeting in December.

Committee Reports

·  Public Relation/Marketing – Mary Cowan

o  Reviewed the listening session breakfast with Dr. Stewart. Well attended, diverse. Dr. Stewart appreciated the format. May be considered for future years. Upcoming priorities include a communication partnership with Mid-continent Library, to be followed by conversation with KC Public Library. Considering a talking points summary for Council members.

·  Personnel – Jerome Barnes

o  Reviewed the recent hires for 4H Youth Development Specialist, and Health and Nutritionist Specialist recommendations. Youth development is filled. Health and Nutritionist has been offered.

·  Budget and Finance – Judy Qualkinbush

o  No news of appropriation. No committee meeting.

·  Facilities – Gloria Austin

o  Committee continues to work on signage, space, lighting, and door, and to consider the lease, including the potential for legal representation to uphold the contract.

County Program Director’s Report

·  Programming Updates

Nov 12 – Bee Keeping class, with a second course in late winter, and perhaps summer.

Considering sending representation to Community Services League Gala on Nov. 12

Discussed anticipated web solutions, including online event management, student profiles, database.

Leaders Honor Roll: Award to people to recognize efforts that support MU Extension. Staff has made requested a recommendation for Mershon Family and Fred Arbanus.
