AmeriCorps Member Service Description

TITLE: Retention Project Coordinator (AmeriCorps)

HOURS OF SERVICE: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., M – F with some evening and weekend hours

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Retention Project Coordinator will work at Washington State University office of Multicultural Student Services. The primary function of the Retention Project Coordinator is to recruit and support peer to peer mentors/mentees/tutors. In this capacity, the RP Coordinator not only works with the students participating in the Multicultural Student Mentor Program (MSMP) and the tutors and tutees from the Enrichment Center but also assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of these programs and activities. The MSMP is part of a historic and probably the most structured university retention strategy for multicultural students. It is through this program that underrepresented students are provided with peer support to facilitate their transition to the university and assist them in learning how to navigate the university, achieve, stay and graduate. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Mentoring and Academic and Enrichment Programs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATED TASKS:

·  Recruit and support peer to peer mentors/mentees/tutors.

·  Maintain documentation of data related to student (e.g. mentor and mentee/tutors/tutees) recruitment and activities such as progress reports.

·  Track outputs and outcomes relative to all program activities including learning outcomes for mentors and GAs.

·  Build or expand a programmatic infrastructure around mentoring/tutoring best practices.

·  Develop marketing and communication strategies for mentors, tutors, and mentees.

·  Develop and implement workshops and other mentoring/tutoring related activities.

·  Plan large and small scale events related to MSMP.

·  Participate in Retention Project trainings, including orientation, graduation, regional cluster meetings and others as available.

·  Become knowledgeable of University resources and assist in the facilitation of mentors/mentees utilization of those services.

·  Become familiar with and support the initiatives designed to accomplish the University, MSS, and the MSMP Mission and Goals.

·  Work closely and cooperatively with the Assistant Director and MSS staff to achieve the goals of the MSMP.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

·  Maintain scheduled office hours at the office.

·  Meet regularly with the Assistant Director to ensure high quality operation of the program.

·  Attend MSS staff, MSMP meetings, and other activities and events as required.

·  Represent the office as a member of the Mentor Program and the office of MSS.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·  AA or BA/BS degree preferred. Applicants from all academic fields will be considered, but those with coursework and/or interest in administration, organizational management or higher education will be given priority.

·  Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.

w  Strong organization, problem-solving and written and oral communication skills.

·  Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously.

·  Ability to identify and initiate work projects and function independently.

·  Basic office computer skills, including word processing. Experience with spreadsheets/databases and desktop publishing preferred.

·  Program coordination and management experience.

·  Understanding of student development in higher education.

·  Cultural competency with minority students.
