Course Description:

This course is designed to develop health care specific knowledge and skills in effective communication, ethical and legal responsibilities, client care, safety, first aid, and CPR. This course prepares the students for the transition to clinical or work based experiences in health care. Students will be shadowing health care professionals in a variety of settings. Class time consists of two periods which allows adequate time for travel to and from clinical sites. Travel will be via school bus or individual transportation. Parents/guardians will be receiving permission forms and additional information regarding clinical rotations.

Supplies:

1.  Binder with separate section for Health Science

2.  One composition or spiral notebook for journaling purposes

3.  Black pens

4.  Royal Blue Scrubs and tennis shoes (no black soled)

5.  Watch with a second hand

Expectations:

As we are all aware, students were chosen for this class after review of grades, discipline reports, attendance, teacher referrals, and interviews. The same expectations that were necessary to be enrolled in Health Science will be implemented throughout the course. Please be aware that if you are unable to comply with all of the Health Science expectations, you will be asked to obtain a schedule change.

Grades:

Tests: 60% (some test grades will be given for clinical rotations)

Daily Grades: 40%

Additional Information for Health Science Students:

1. As explained in the interview process, all Health Science students are automatically in the co-curricular organization called HOSA Future Health Professionals. The membership fee is $25.00 and various other fees will occur during the year for HOSA events and competitions.

2. Being a part of this class means you learn how to act like a professional. This includes classroom behavior and hospital or other clinical behavior. The Health Science student is a role model for other students in the school and I have very high expectations for their behavior and academic effort.

3. I prefer that you come to school dressed in scrubs and ready to go to the hospital but I will allow 5 minutes for changing if necessary.

4. Part of being a professional involves grooming skills. That means that your scrubs must be clean and ironed. Also, the scrub pants must be hemmed to an appropriate length. Stepping on your pants will not be allowed. I will inspect every student prior to going to the bus for compliance with grooming standards. In addition, when we are not going to the hospital, you are expected to be well groomed and to follow all dress code rules. Health care professionals tend to dress on the conservative side, so it is good practice for you to start doing that now.

5. Girls must wear their hair pulled back with a hair tie while they are at the hospital. Hair carries many bacteria that can make patients sicker than they already are. Hair must be clean and free of oil. For most teenagers, this requires shampooing the hair every day. Girls may have one pair of stud earrings on but may not be hanging.

6. Boys must keep their hair no longer than collar length and have no facial hair. Also, they are not allowed to wear earrings while at the hospital.

7. All students must have a watch with a second hand. Points will be deducted from their daily uniform grade otherwise.

8. Students are not to eat in the cafeteria at the hospital, visit the gift shop, or get snacks from the vending machines. We are there to learn and get the most from our time there.

9. If you are too sick to be in the patient care areas, you will go to the nurse’s clinic and rest until your next class.

10. Please understand that this is NOT a “blow off class.” Do not ask me to leave my class to go do other teacher’s work. Finish their work before or after school or at home.

11. You may have bottled water only in class. If you bring out other foods, I will ask you to put it in the trash can. Please try to eat breakfast so you can make it until lunch.

12. According to school policy, cell phones, Ipods, and any other electronic devices are forbidden in the classroom with the exception of the Chromebooks. I will follow the policies established by administration at New Caney High School.

13. You are not allowed behind my desk, on my computer, or in my office, no exceptions. Also, no student is allowed in the back lab this year. You will go to the restroom at the end of the F hallway. You will be given 3 tickets every 9 weeks for bathroom passes. Please try to use the bathroom prior to class or between the first period and second period of the class.

HEALTH SCIENCE

COURSE SYLLABUS

14. Stay in your seats unless given permission otherwise. You may not line up at the door when the bell is about to ring.

15. Tardies will count! Consequences will be given according to school rules. The definition of being on time means being in your seat ready to work. If you are walking around the room or standing out in the hall, you will be counted tardy. Professional health care workers must be at their jobs ready to work BEFORE their patient arrives, or before change of shift as the situation may be.

16. No sleeping is allowed in Health Science. In addition, leave your other work in your locker because you will not be allowed to complete it. You are here to learn to be a medical professional and that is what I am going to teach you!

17. Offenses to these guildelines will be kept in a binder and consequences will be given accordingly. This could include not being allowed to go to the hospital rotation for 1 day up to 3 days. If there are repeated offenses or if a student does not adhere to the Kingwood Hospital rules, the student could be removed from the Health Science class.

I’m looking forward to an exciting, experience filled year with many new learning opportunities. As long as you comply with my expectations, we will have a WONDERFUL year!
