LOCAL EDUCATOR REAPPOINTED TO
OCC BOARD OF TRUSTEES
SYRACUSE, NY – The OCC Board of Trustees recently reappointed Trustee Corey L. Mitchell, Sr., to the board to serve a seven-year term. In 2005, Mitchell was named to the seat formerly held by Octavia Wilcox, who served as an OCC Trustee for more than six years.
Mitchell has been an educator for more than 12 years and is a teacher in the Cicero-North Syracuse School District. He has also served as a youth counselor at the Dunbar Center in Syracuse. He earned a bachelor of science in elementary education from SUNY Oswego and a master of science in education from Le Moyne College. In 2005, Mitchell became the first African-American man to serve on the OCC Board of Trustees.
“As an experienced teacher and community leader, Mr. Mitchell has demonstrated his commitment to advancing issues of importance to all citizens,” said OCC President Debbie L. Sydow, Ph. D. “His unwavering support of higher education and academic excellence will benefit the students, faculty and the entire campus community through his continuing role as an OCC Trustee.”
The OCC Board of Trustees is chaired by David W. Murphy. Board members are Vice Chair Connie Monteleone Whitton, Secretary Paul M. Solomon, Finance Chair Margaret O’Connell, Dr. Gary R. Livent, Donald M. Mawhinney, Jr., Esq., William Towsley and Student Trustee Andrew J. Hartnett. The average length of service for an OCC Trustee is 10 years.
