Area(s) of interest. Please describe your intended area(s) of interest in Research Informatics. Also indicate whether your primary focus would be in clinical informatics (e.g. using clinical data sources and involving analyses of registry data, claims data, population health data, etc.) or in bio-informatics (e.g. using biospecimens and involvingbiomarkers, genomics, proteomics, microbiomics, environmental exposures, etc.).

Long-term goals. Please describe your long-term goals for becoming an independent researcher with an informatics focus, and include what you hope to contribute and to gain from this training and research experience.

Research mentorship. Please indicate whether you have identified research mentors to support your internship project and indicate their areas of expertise as well as how you believe they can contribute to your research and/or professional development.

Research training. Please list any research training that you have already obtained or are currently involved in, including specifics of any current or prior informatics-related training.

Research plan. Please summarize your anticipated research plan(s), including what you intend to accomplish within each year of the two-year internship training period (note that internships are approved for one year and may be extended to the subsequent year, conditional upon satisfactory progress during the first year). At a minimum, please address the following areas in your plan:

  1. Didactic training. All applicants will expected to attend and complete an informatics seminar series that will cover a variety of topics in clinical and bio-informatics (a remote attendance options for the weekly seminar will be offered). Please indicate areas of additional coursework, workshops, or other didactic training that you anticipate will be important to your intended research and career development. If you have identified specific courses locally that you will be participating in, please provide details of credit hours and sponsoring institutions.
  2. Research project summary. Please provide a brief summary of one or more principal research areas you plan to pursue as your internship research project (one page maximum for each area). One project area of principal interest is entirely sufficient to describe, but if you have a number of candidate areas you are considering, you may include a description of up to 3 of these.
  3. Usage of data sources, data collection, and/or biospecimens or other biological datasets.
  4. For internship projects in clinical informatics, please indicate which data sets within the CARRA Registry, other CARRA-related data sources, and/or outside data sources that you intend to utilize for your internship research project(s).
  5. For internship projects involving biospecimens and associated datasets (e.g. sequencing data, expression profiles, etc), please indicate existing sources as well as their anticipated cost and availability, including any necessary sequencing or other processing. Note that it is not the intent of this internship to support research costs related to obtaining, transporting, or processing biospecimens, but CARRA does provide other competitive grant mechanisms for research projects involving biospecimen research.
