Question One
Specific evidence
Yokohama is in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is an international city. It has a port. Initially, it developed trade. Close to Tokyo – takes 30 minutes by train. Close to main highways so is convenient. Population 3 690 000.
The first day, Paul went to school in jeans because he did not know Japanese teachers and businessmen usually wear suits. He then wore a suit. It was a bit of a bother because he did not have many suits.
Good thing that the school followed business practice to reduce use of electricity used in air conditioning, so could go without suit jacket and tie in the summer heat.
Paul also thinks it is good that Japanese students take responsibility and clean their own classroom.
Paul is talking to students (school or university) who are studying Japanese about future opportunities where they will benefit from their language learning. He hopes to inspire learners to study hard and then go on the JET programme where they can have similar experiences to him and learn new things about the culture of New Zealand and Japan. (Students must mention the purpose of the speech.)

Question Two
Specific evidence
The date is 7th July. (Day before is also accepted because of wording of Japanese question)
It is the day of Tanabata.
If it is not fine, the god’s daughter and her husband cannot meet in the sky. If there is rain, there will be too much water and the daughter cannot cross the river. If it is fine, she can cross the river and meet her husband. The opportunity for this is only one night a year, 7th July. It is also important for the god that his daughter is happy, so that is why he allowed the meeting once a year.
The daughter was sent to the east of the river and her husband to the west because after they married, they did not do any work and the god got angry.

It is the rainy season.
Kanto region. Tokyo southerly wind, occasionally cloudy. Saitama Prefecture strong wind but fine. Kanagawa Prefecture occasional showers in the morning, fine in the afternoon. Temperatures: Tokyo 27 degrees, Saitama Prefecture 29 degrees, Kanagawa Prefecture 24 degrees. 2 or 3 degrees higher than today.
It is fine, so the lovers in the Tanabata story can meet.
The rainy season is also the season for climbing Mt Fuji. But even though the scenery is beautiful, the amount of rubbish, particularly around vending machines, does not make for good memories. The government is urging climbers to take their rubbish home in an attempt to solve the problem.
