One scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded this year to an outstanding student of Scandinavian Studies. All qualified students of Scandinavian Studies who will be attending MSU or studying abroad in an approved exchange program next year are encouraged to apply. Students must be full-time students (of any major) who will enroll in at least one Scandinavian Studies course in Fall 2017 and one course Spring 2018 (on campus or through study abroad) to be eligible.

A committee from World Languages and Cultures will review all applications. Committee members will consider the demonstrated performance and perceived potential of each candidate in making their recommendations. In their deliberations the committee members will give preference to candidates who have done the following:

1.  Achieved, at a minimum, an overall GPA of 3.2 with a GPA of 3.5 in Scandinavian Studies

2.  Completed at least one Scandinavian course, preferably in Norwegian or Swedish

language.

3. Demonstrated enthusiastic and consistent participation in activities outside the

regular Scandinavian Studies courses that involve using or promoting

Scandinavian language and culture.

Applicants should submit a 200-300 word essay providing specific examples of

foreign-language related activities in which they are involved and future plans to use their

Scandinavian language and cultural knowledge. This essay should include their projected

coursework for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Students must provide a current academic transcript (unofficial transcript is acceptable).

Application forms are available from the department office in AH 227 or at http://www.mnsu.edu/languages/scholarships.html -- The application form should be returned no later than March 15, 2017.

After careful review of all applications, the Department’s decision will be shared with the

applicants. Should the recipient of the scholarship drop below full-time status at any time

during the 2017-18 academic year, the Department will award the balance of the scholarship to a runner-up.
