ART NEWS
September / 2015

Welcome back to our returning families and students & a BIG welcome to all of our new families and students! I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer-I have already heard about some amazing vacations from some of our students! For the new families-every student here at PS166 will take art once a week in the art studio for 45 minutes. Students will be learning about artists, art movements, and art concepts through hands on explorations using a variety of materials during the year. I hope to be able to coordinate at least one museum trip per class for grades 1-5 to link with our in school projects and classroom studies.Throughout the year, I will ask for donations of items such as Kleenex, paper towels, baby wipes, tin foil, etc. Also-if you would like to donate wire hangers-the ones that are 100% metal-no paper-I will take them to use later this year with the second graders. Other recycled items that you may want to donate: ribbons, yarns, wall paper or fabric swatches, buttons, etc. I will create a wish list for back to school night and have it posted on line. We will have our annual art show in May-which was a huge success last year! I look forward to getting to meet and work with all of the students here and hope to have another fantastic year! What’s going on in KINDERGARTEN?
As I meet all of the new kindergarteners we will begin to explore a variety of art media through a variety of in class projects. Students will learn about the primary colors and what happens when they mix. We will learn what happens when lines connect, and about shapes they create.
Turn off the TV, put down the iPad and let your child(ren) be creative at home-have drawing supplies such as paper and crayons, or markers handy. Scissor and glue practice can be done by having your child cut magazines, or construction paper to make collages. Draw out shapes and have them practice cutting along the lines-HINT: it’s easier to draw shapes on the edge instead of in center of the page for little hands to cut them out without the frustrations!
Sometimes we get a bit messy in here-so if it’s a day you know your child has art-please don’t send him/her in in their very best clothes-we do our best to keep everyone as neat as they arrived-but messes happen in art-even when wearing a smock!
Supplies:
All students need a plain white paper sketchbook-the best is one with either a spiral binding-or book type binding-the pads with glue fall apart. Size roughly 9”x12”Please write your child’s name and class on the front! / NEWS FROM FIRST GRADE-
All first graders will start off with a self- portrait drawing. Students will use mirrors to make careful observations. Have your child try it out at home! The more practice, the better one gets at anything! We will move on to other projects using paint, scissors, glue, and a variety of drawing materials throughout the year. Students will learn not just how to make art but about artists who have. I hope to get the students to an art museum later in the year…In the past we have gone to the MOMA-we will see where this year takes us.

Second graders will start off drawing a self-portrait in the style of artist, Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian artist known manly for his signature stylized portraits.Students will be using oil pastels for this drawing. This has been a highly successful project in the past years, and I anticipate many truly amazing portraits this year!

THIRD GRADE ARTISTS
Third graders will deepen their observational skills and work on using pencil and colored pencil to create realistic looking self-portraits. We will learn about the artist, Frida Kahlo, a wonderful Mexican artist who painted multiple self-portraits in her unique surrealist/folk art style. We will study other artists and art movements throughout the year, and use an array of art media to complete projects.

Fourth graders will learn about contour lines by creating abstract self-portraits. They will utilize pencil, Sharpie and watercolor to complete these. Students can practice “blind-contour” drawing at home. (This is to draw without looking at your paper.) I also ask the students to keep their pencil on the page; this is a very tricky concept-but makes for some very interesting finished pieces!
