Fundamentals of Project Management
Objectives
This course is designed to introduce people to the philosophy and benefits of project management within an organisation. On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the nature and scope of projects and the need for project management
- Produce project plans
- Produce project schedules
- Produce project budgets
- Identify the contribution of effective human resource management on project outcomes
- Develop basic management tools to effectively manage project objectives
Course Content
The contents of the course will include:
- The need for project management.
- Project planning.
- Project scheduling.
- Project estimating.
- Project cost control.
- The human elements of project management.
Course Lecturers
Mark Massyn qualified as a Construction Manager and has worked in the construction industry, as a project manager in the mining industry and as a project manager in the consulting engineering profession. He has also worked as a management consultant in the mining, utilities and manufacturing industries on project management and management systems. He is currently a senior lecturer in the department of Construction Economics and Management at the University of Cape Town.
Paul Bowen PhD, a Registered Project Manager, is a Professor and former head of the Department of Construction Economics and Management at UCT. He is a nationally-rated researcher and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. His professional and academic experience relating to the construction and property industries has resulted in more than 130 publications. His research interests include project procurement, communication, sustainability, value management, and the cost modelling of buildings.
Course Information
Who should attend?
The course will be of benefit to all who are concerned with the management of projects and who are considering implementing project management within their organisation. This will include both technical and managerial sectors of the market. Applicants from all disciplines would be welcome as the course is widely applicable.
Format
The course consists of one three hour session per week for 6 weeks. In addition to these sessions there will be an optional test or assignment at the end of the course.
Cost
The fee for the total 18-hour course will be R4200. This fee includes a comprehensive set of course notes and refreshments. Discounts for staff and students of UCT, and students of other tertiary education institutes are available under certain circumstances.
Certificates
A certificate of attendance will be awarded to all course members who attend a minimum of five of the six sessions. Alternatively, a certificate of successful course completion will be issued to those who obtain a minimum of 50% in the (optional) test or assignment.
CPD Credit Requirements
The course is registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa, and is accredited for the award of CPD points, which are now required for continuing professional registration. The ECSA course code is UCTFPM12

Payment is due one week before the start of a course.
Cancellations must be received one week before the start of a course, or the full course fee will be charged
