Congress Theme

Development, Environment and Geoinformatics

Development has been portrayed through the lens of various paradigms. The shift from the Classical’ Environmental Determinism’ paradigm to the Neo Classical paradigm and then the Marxist paradigm of development has been quite conspicuous. The shifting emphasis has been on the utilization of land and labour so as to optimize the spatial returns in terms of development. Development has been varyingly depicted as ‘economic growth’, ‘modernization’, and ‘distributive justice’ and also as ‘socio- economic transformation’. The glaring contrast between the areas of paucity and areas of plenty at times defy the efforts of the planners. Polarization with regard to development at times finds manifestation in the north – south divide, at times in socio – spatial inequality besides a plenitude of similar contrasting core - periphery scenarios in varying environmental setups.

Environment encompasses under its ambit the physical landscape, social landscape and the built environment. All these are inextricably linked up and the degree of linkage between each one of these is related to the level of development in a particular region. Man - environment relations have for long been the central focus of debates and discussions. In fact they have been discussed from a variety of perspectives like the economic, technological, administrative, social and ecological besides others. The vulnerability of environment to various hazards and disasters and the impending danger of a holocaust have led to detailed probing of the environmental scenario. Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit have been carried out to help maintain an ecological balance.

While earlier areal or Spatial Data had a very restricted use, dissemination and exchange, the digital technologies are making the world more ‘Spatially Enabled’ and also well integrated. These technologies are bringing spatial solutions to the doorsteps of people and their role as Decision Support tools cannot be discounted. Geoinformatics along with its accessories like GIS and Remote Sensing helps in assessing the results of various government policies that have a bearing on the spatial locations. Viewed at differently, the traditional tools of the Geographers - Maps - have found an added advantage with the revolution in cyber- informatics, where they are now part of a more dynamic and interactive environment.

TECHNICAL SESSIONS

The Congress will have about thirty sessions, spanning the nine main themes. A panel discussion on the main theme of the Congress is planned involving luminaries from Universities, Govt. departments, industry& professionals.

√  IGU Special Session on ‘IGU Initiatives’ on Cultures and Civilizations for Human Development’

SPECIAL LECTURE

Sir Arthur Geddes Memorial Special Lecture will be organized during the course of the Congress. Prof. Arthur Geddes played a significant role in selecting the site for Osmania University.

CONGRESS DATE & VENUE

The 1st I.I.G.C will be held at Hyderabad during October 5-7, 2006. The Inaugural function will be held at the Tagore Auditorium. Four Technical Sessions and Panel discussions will be held simultaneously.

EXHIBITION

An Exhibition of all the Geography and Geoinformatics software and data products as well as related equipment will be organized during the Congress to encourage interested companies to show-case their products & services. The Congress offers an ideal mix of clientele for these products and will be of immense benefit to the exhibitors and academic fraternity.

Excursions to important places in and around Hyderabad are planned for the delegates on advance intimation and booking. Delegates are advised to apply early for these as participation will be limited.

SOUVENIR & PROCEEDINGS

To commemorate the occasion of the 1st International Indian Geography Congress a souvenir will be brought out and released at the Inaugural Function by the Chief Guest. It will contain the abstracts of papers. A copy will be given to all the Registered participants.

Select papers submitted before the due date will be published as Proceedings of the Congress and the others will be brought out as Working Papers.

ACCOMODATION

Accomodation for 3 nights and 3 days at Guest Houses close to the conference venue is provided for keynote speakers, paper presenters, NAGI office bearers and special invitees. Accompanying members have to stay in hotels at their own expense.

Accomodation in Economy class hotels can also be booked on prior intimation to the Conveners at an approximate tariff of Rs.350-600 (about US$ 10-15) per day for Non air-conditioned rooms and Rs.750-1000 (about US$ 20-25) for air-conditioned rooms.

ABOUT HYDERABAD

The city of Hyderabad is located at17°22' North and 78°26' East. It has an average altitude of 536 metres above MSL. The annual range of temperature in the city is 10 degrees to 44 degrees centigrade. The average annual rainfall of the city is 85 cms. October has a pleasant climate, with the temperature around 27 degrees Centigrade ( 81 Degrees Farenheit). The population of Hyderabad is about 7 Million in 2006 and the area is 1865 square kilometers. It is well connected to the rest of India by road, rail and air. It also has an International Airport.

ABOUT OSMANIA UNIVERSITY

Osmania University, established in 1918, is the seventh oldest in India, the third oldest in south India and the first to be established in the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad. With a sprawling campus of nearly 1600 acres and buildings of majestic beauty and architectural splendor, Osmania University, is perhaps, the largest higher education system in India. It is a home to nearly 300,000 students pursuing their higher studies in its Campus, Constituent, Affiliated Colleges and District Centres. Its faculty and staff number nearly 5000. ABOUT THE GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT AT OSMANIA UNIVERSITY

The Department of Geography, Osmania University is the largest and the oldest in South India. It was established in the year 1942. It offers M.Sc. Geography, M.Sc. Geoinformatics, Post - Graduate Diploma in Geographical Cartography, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs.

The Department specializes in Urban Geography, Development and Environmental Studies and Geoinformatics. The Department was granted Departmental Special Assistance Program (DSAP) in 1978 by UGC and has completed four phases of DSAP. In 2005 it was granted the FIST program by the Department of Science and Technology, GOI and ASIST Program by the University Grants Commission.
