FERRARI SETS NEW SPEED RECORDS – ON WATER

A Ferrari setting a new speed record may not be a total surprise, except this Ferrari was doing it on water with legendary record breaker 71 year old Eugenio Molinari setting his 71st world record in a Ferrari-powered speed boat.

The two records were set in the Endurance Group B class S1 and S2 categories, which are dedicated to Gran Turismo boats with a minimum weight (including driver and fuel) of 1,100 kg and 1,450 kg (with ballast) with an average speed of 123.288 kmh and 122.035 kmh for the flying kilometre.
Both the boat and engine derive from serial production, while the engine has been slightly altered so that it could be used on water from its normal use in the Ferrari F430. This is not the first time that shipmasters have used engines from Ferrari for competitions and high performances. As early as 1953 a boat was fitted with an engine from Ferrari, a 375 F1. The new record-setting boat is part of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Ferrari.
"I dedicate this record to Luca di Montezemolo, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Ferrari. Montezemolo leads the company with passion and great innovative energy, maintaining the spirit of the Prancing Horse," said 71-year-old Eugenio Molinari after setting his 71st record.
The Ferrari V8 is mid-mounted in both car and boat, with the 4.3 litre 90° V8 producing 490 BHP at 8,500 rpm to offer remarkable performance on water and tarmac. For the off-shore application the engine has been modified in the areas of its air intake, exhaust and engine control. The cooling system remained unchanged, while the radiator coolant/air had been changed to a heat exchanger coolant/water. The cooling circuit of the latter uses a pump separate from the engine powered by the transmission, pumping cooling water to the heat exchanger and engine exhaust.
During the last half century Eugenio Molinari, 71, has set numerous world records and won many races, including the Pavia-Venezia race, the longest race on water in the world, eight times and set the average speed record of 188 kmh at the "Giro del Lario" race, for which he was awarded the title "Fastest man on earth on navigable waters.”
