Learning Objectives

1.To best manage the child’s journey, accessing help from the appropriate source at the appropriate time

(To learn what you can do in your role and to understand the referral pathways and services available for paediatrics and how to use the hot line and to understand when to use acute/AE services)

2. To improve confidence in managing common paediatric problems that present to you in your workplace

(Update on current learning needs in paediatrics and update on what’s new in paediatrics)

Quiz before the meeting

Start session deciding what the priorities are for this session

Case scenarios

Develop Resource pack based on learning needs and compile a pack “ Things you need to know in Paediatric care”

Pre meeting

E mail to GPs:

Please send us 2-3 areas where you would like help in managing a child who presents to you in the pharmacy , at the surgery or in your place of work.

Try to pose a specific question.

Action Yvette and Zoe – done topics raised so far are “the crying baby “ and “the wheezy infant”

Send a quiz on Paediatric topics.

Action Su( ask registrars to devise a question in MCQ format based on the queries sent in by GPs) - awaited

Develop a Resource pack “ 10 things you need to know in paediatrics and what’s new”

Action Su( could be done after the meeting)

Ideas suggested include:

Diagnosing Diabetes

The hot infant < 6 months

Lactulose and constipation

Recurrent viral induced wheeze and asthma

Format of meeting

1.0– 1.15 Lunch, Welcome, Introductions.

Consider the questions sent in by the group and prioritise these.

Facilitator to consider use of the pre prepared scenarios and which ones to use. Can give nutshell of each scenario and group can vote on how to make best use of the time and resource of having a paediatrician there.

1.15 – 1.35

Topic 1

The screaming baby with desperate parents

Facilitator Tasks

First 15 minutes:

  1. Start the meeting summarizing the questions sent in by the group and any learning needs identified form the quiz
  2. Advise the group of the 3 prepared topics ( The screaming infant, the aching teenager and the hot child with a rash)
  3. Prioritise how the group would like to spend the time

One hour

For each topic/question and answer session ( For 3 topics/questions , 20 minutes each) Ask group to discuss the problem in groups of 2-3 ( enabling everyone to participate)

What can I do to manage this problem?

Which paediatric services could I use? What is the response time for these?

Ask the group to report their answers to the paediatrician and have a discussion on what may be the best approach.
