KITCHEN & BATH DESIGN COMPETITION

OFFICIAL RULES

The NKBA WI/Upper MI Chapter Student Design Competition will recognize excellence in the projects of Interior Design students, paying special attention to creative designs and attention to detail by the local students enrolled in Interior Design schools in Wisconsin/Upper MI.

Success in the form of a winning entry in this competition means increased visibility for your College as well as individually. This recognition also has valuable publicity opportunities. Publicity opportunities include putting this award on your resume, proudly displaying the award at Portfolio Show and showing the award during job interviews. The process of entering this competition gives the student experience in writing about their design work as well as practicing professionalism in design documents. Judged by a panel of industry professionals, this competition acknowledges the talent of kitchen and bath students to plan safe, functional, personalized spaces, which incorporate imaginative design statements and aesthetically pleasing solutions.

COMPETITION RULES & REQUIREMENTS:

Entrant and Project Eligibility:

  1. Entrants must be a student currently enrolled in a two year or four year college in the state of Wisconsin or Upper Michigan, studying Interior Design, as of April 21, 2017.
  2. Projects entered must have been completed while student was enrolled in a two year or four year Interior Design focused program located in Wisconsin or Upper Michigan.
  3. Projects entered must have been completed by the Student applying for the competition, as indicated on the entry form.
  4. Student does not need to be an NKBA member to enter, although entry fees change for student members and non-student members.
  5. Your college does not need to be an NKBA Endorsed program to enter.
  6. Design entries may be completed projects done in class. They do not have to be actual projects done in the real world.

Entries and Entry Form:

  1. All applicable sections of the entry form must be completed and all required signatures obtained.
  2. Student name, client name, or school name may not appear anywhere on plans, drawings or photos; and may only appear where requested on entry form.The contest needs to be judged with complete anonymity
  3. Entries must be submitted unframed and unmounted. Do not put entry material in binders/portfolios.
  4. The number of projects eligible for awards may vary. The judges reserve the right to determine the number of entries in any category that will be recognized with an award.

Entry Fees:

  1. A $25.00 entry fee is required for each project submitted for NKBA Student Members. For Non-Student Members of NKBA, the entry fee is $35.00.
  2. Checks made out to NKBA - WI/Upper MI Chapter should be included in your entry. Checks are non-refundable.

About Your Presentation:

The entry needs to represent the quality of the design. The better the quality of the drawings, the easier they are to read, the better they make the entry look. Copies are fine- but take the time to “clean up” whatever you are sending in, you don’t want to submit fuzzy or smudged reproductions.

What to submit:

EntryDrawings:

  1. Official paper size for all drawing documents 11” x 17”.
  2. Proposed floor plan. Floor plans are requested at ½” = 1’0” scale. All plans and drawings must be clean, easy to understand and professionally presented, including proper dimensioning and specifications. Graphics and presentation standards include but are not limited to:
  • The entire room’s dimensions (all finished wall surfaces, wall openings and fixed structures) must be indicated.
  • Appliances must be identified.
  • Cabinet specifications are optional, but nomenclature of cabinets should be included.
  • Label adjoining rooms
  1. 3D Color pictures of the proposed floor plan. Pictures of the project maybe produced by hand (hand rendered), or by computer. Any computer generated drawings are welcomed. The more drawings you can submit that show your work, the easier it is to judge.
  2. Cabinets, appliances and fixtures must be clearly identified. If the information does not fit on the plan, the elements should be numbered and then identified on a corresponding legend.
  3. If you do not want the judges to have to interpret items about your project, do not leave anything unclear. Include dimensions on all plans, and specifications of products are helpful.
  4. It is advisable that any entry that is a renovation project include a “before” floor plan so that Judges canclearly see the transformation from old to new.
  5. Elevations and/or perspective renderings are advisable.
  6. Plans and drawings are preferred to be in ½” equals 1’0” scale. If ½” scale does not fit on 11” x 17” paper; then please print it to a scale that will fit on 11” x 17”. Make sure the scale is noted on your plan. No paper size larger than 11” x 17” for plans!

Written Design Statement:

  • Include with your drawings a design statement. In this design statement list the client scope of the project. What did the client want? What were the goals of the project? How did you accomplish this? What challenges were there in this project? Explain all of this in a type written design statement. Make the most of the design statement. It is your outlet to tell the judges about obstacles and special considerations that you faced with and how your creativity allowed for execution of an excellent design.
  • This is also your opportunity to explain to the judges what might not be very clear on the drawings.
  • Design statementsshould be 500 words or less, double-spaced.

Specifications:

It helps the judges to understand what types of products you planned to go into the space. Supplying either a copy of specifications or list of products included in your design will help.

Materials and Finishes Board:

If a materials and finishes board for the project was created and you have the ability to send a paper (not an actual board) color copy of the board along with the project, this would be helpful.

2017Student Competition Categories:

The competition is divided into 2 categories:

Category A: A complete residential kitchen in a renovation or new construction project.

Category B: A complete residential bathroomin a renovation or new construction project.

Reasons for Disqualification:

Failure to meet/observe any of the stated eligibility or contest requirements/rules is grounds for disqualification of any entry from the competition. Any entry received without student and instructor signatures will be automatically disqualified. NKBA WI/Upper MI Chapter reserves the right to disqualify a project before, during or after the contest judging.

Awards:

Monetary prizes, plaques and publicity make up the prize package for winning entrants.

Second Place$75.00

Third Place$50.00

Design Awards Program:

A special Awards Ceremony will be held in honor of the NKBA WI/Upper MI Chapter Student Competition Award Winners. This event will be the forum for official announcement of the winners and for the presentation of awards. The awards ceremony will take place on May 172017, at Options for Independent Living in Green Bay Wisconsin.
