Job Function
To provide an effective educational and therapeutic intervention for individuals obligated to engage inalcohol and other drug treatment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Counselling and Mediation
- Provide assessment, counselling, referral and AOD information and support to all client groups as appropriate.
- Participate in shared case management and consultation with other service providers.
- Write reports as required on client participation and progress.
- Provide support to clients before and after their release from prison.
- Monitor client progress, determine appropriate levels of support and assess for exit point.
Group Work
- Design and facilitate information and education groups to:
Promote confidence and skills development to support lifestyle change and personal growth.
Address offending and addictions behaviour.
Representation and Networking
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of AOD and other relevant agencies/services.
- Actively liaise with relevant agencies and other service providers.
- Attend interagency networking groups as directed.
Teamwork and Agency Development
- Participate as a valued team member promoting and contributing to a supportive team environment.
- Provide support to and share expertise with other staff, students and volunteers.
- Attend staff meetings, AOD training sessions and planning workshops.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the agency service model and service delivery of policies and procedures.
- Contribute to the Continuous Quality Improvement processes of the agency.
Administration and Supervision
- Participate in regular supervision sessions.
- Maintain client files, statistics, and other client related administration duties.
- Report statistical data and participate in research projects as required.
- Undertake other administrative and office management tasks as required.
Selection Criteria
Drug and Alcohol Through-care Service (DATS) Counsellor/Educator
Essential
- Skills in facilitating groups.
- Demonstrated alcohol and other drug counselling skills and experience.
- Demonstrated excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including report writing.
- Knowledge of services and community resources relevant to the needs of the client group.
- Well-developed time and self-management skills and ability to work with limited supervision.
- Current First Aid certificate.
- Sound computer skills.
- Current ‘C’ class driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
Desirable
- Experience working within a prison setting.
- Tertiary qualification in social/behavioural skills or equivalent experience.
- Sound knowledge of court procedures and community justice functions and ability to work with coerced clients.
