HOST FAMILY LETTER # 3

To:Host Families

From:Terrina

Date:2 August 2010

Dear Host Parents,

The third week of our program is underway! The students are spending a glorious day today at the BishopMuseum! Ask your students about their experiences there!

Here are the activities for the remainder of the week. We’ll be busy practicing for the Ho`olaule`a! PPP T-shirts are needed both Wednesday and Friday this week.

  • Wednesday, August 4th, we will go to the Waikiki Aquarium. Please make sure the students wear their PPP T-shirt and comfortable walking shoes. Unfortunately, no time for the beach.
  • Thursday, August 5th, the students will enjoy their final afternoon at AlaMoanaShopping Center for shopping or other adventures with a buddy (if more rehearsal time is needed, we may cancel Ala Moana, but will advise you). Please complete the Thursday form regarding Thursday pick-up provided by link on the weblog and have your student return it to school by Wednesday, Aug 4th. They will be given $5.00 cash to purchase lunch.

Please remind them that this will be their last opportunity for shopping if they need to purchase personal gifts and souvenirs. There will be no shopping time on the BigIsland. As the BigIsland is cool, please remind them to purchase a sweatshirt if they do not have a warm jacket.

  • Friday, August 6th, Ho`olaule`a! The students’official attire that day is the Pan Pacific T-shirt and long pants. All students will attend a final Ho`olaule`a practice in the Luke Lecture Hall. Therefore, there is no pick-up at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

Important Information on the Ho‘olaule‘a:

  • Potluck. Thank you for helping us with our dinner. You may bring in your potluck dish between 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Please help us by putting your potluck dish in a disposable containerand labeling all serving utensils. The potluck dinner will begin about 6:15 pm.
  • Program. The program begins at 4:30 p.m. our celebration of student learning will include presentations, culture sharing and the awarding of diplomas. Parking will be available in the lot in front of Wo Center and in nearby numbered parking stalls. Dinner typically ends around 8:00 PM.
  • Student attire. PPP T-shirts and long pants. Students will also wear their kihei that they made.
  • Webstream. The entire event will be webstreamed live for the third consecutive year thanks to our Video Production Department. I will provide you with the link as soon as it is available. Students and partner schools will be advised so that they can share this information with parents.

Big Island trip begins at Wo Center on Sunday, August 8th. Week 3 families, please bring the students and all their luggage to WoInternational Center no later than8:30AM SHARP. May we kindly ask if you can make sure your students have breakfast prior to drop-off and IF YOU COULD PACK THEM A SIMPLE SANDWICH WITH A FRUIT for lunch that they can take on the airplane with them.

Please be on time as the school bus will depart for the airport at 9:15 AM. The students will travel to the BigIslandon Hawaiian Airlines Flight #182, departing at 11:49 AM for Hilo. For host parents who live by the airport and find it more convenient, please take your student(s) directly to the Hawaiian Airlines ticket counter at the airport no later than 1:00 PM on Sunday morning. Please inform our office of this preferred arrangement by 1:00 p.m. on Thursday,August 5th.

During the weekend, may we ask you to help your student(s) pack for this trip? Attached is a list of things for them to pack ON TOP for easy access during our BigIsland trip. As they will be leaving for home upon our return to Honolulu on Saturday, August 14th, they will need to pack everything. Students are allowed two check-in pieces of luggage at no charge (yes, we’re lucky!) They will have to pay an overweight baggage fee of $25 if their bags are over 50 pounds andHawaiian Air will NOT accept any baggage over 70 pounds.

We will remind students of these luggage stipulations. We also need to remind students NOT to pack any sharp implements (manicuring scissors, Swiss army knives, etc.) or liquids in their carry-on bag or it will be confiscated. Also, they must pack any film or disposable cameras in their carry-on luggage as the x-ray machines for checked baggage will destroy the film.

On the BigIsland, Kilauea Military Camp will provide bedding and one set of towels, and it is strongly recommended that students bring a beach towel. Coin-operated washing machines, dryers and detergent will be available to the students.

We will make the most of our stay at HawaiiVolcanoesNational Park. We plan many interpretive hikes, and explorations to Punalu‘u and a day trip to the Kona side. We’ll enjoy a night hike with Kumu Tai and stargazing, hike across Halemaumau crater and through the Thurston Lava Tubes, and have fun with our bowling tournament and talent show!

The students are scheduled to return from Hilo on Saturday, August 14th, arriving at 7:12 AM on Hawaiian Airlines Flight #101. Students will then depart directly fortheir home countries. The kumu will assist students to various areas of departure and assist with students’ check-ins and departures. As a reminder, we request that host families notcome to the airport on August 14th as the students will proceed immediately to check-in to take their flights home. I will contact specific host families regarding students whowill NOT be leaving on August 14th.

We hope that the last week will be as enjoyable for you as it promises to be for our students. We are extremely grateful to all our host families for making this a memorable PanPacific summer for our young friends from abroad. On behalf of the entire PPP faculty and the Wo International Center staff, thank you for opening your hearts and homes to our students. We hope to see you again next year!
