Context

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives. Within the UK, the British Red Cross operates through about 3000 staff and over 30,000 volunteers. Geographically, the UK is organised into 22 areas, which are grouped into 4 Territories.

Overall Purpose and scope of the Post

The Service Assistant is responsible for supporting the Service Co-ordinator with the development and delivery of the service across Rochdale, Middleton and Heywood and the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers.

The Cancer Support Service aims to provide time limited support for older people who have cancer and their carers. Our volunteers will provide practical and emotional support and our signposting/referrals will enable them to remain living at home, independently for as long as possible, accessing any and all relevant and appropriate support.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1)On a day to day basis assist/support with the delivery of services as appropriate.

2)In liaison with the Service Co-ordinator and Volunteer Co-ordinator develop and maintain databases i.e. logging support provided

3)Process the paperwork for the recruitment of volunteers in line with the Society’s policy.

4)Develop and maintain appropriate filing systems.

5)Develop administrative processes to support the services.

6)Responsible for handling queries from volunteers, staff, organisations and members of the public in a professional manner

7)Responsible for maintenance of own filing system and personal files

8)Handle and secure monies appropriately, and in accordance with the Society’s financial procedures.

9)To carry out financial processes in relation to the service complying with Red Cross policy.

10)To assist with the promotion and publicising of the services including talks, presentations etc, in conjunction with the service/volunteer co-ordinator.

11)To support and assist the service co-ordinator with recruiting, selecting, supervising, training, developing and supporting volunteers in accordance with the Red Cross policy.

12)Work within H&S regulations at all times.

13)Maintain proper records of activity levels and of service volunteers in accordance with Society policies and provide management information as required.

14)To attend any relevant meetings, conferences and/or training courses as required by the post.

15)To uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement: to work in pursuit of the British Red Cross’s vision, mission and objectives, to work within its Diversity policy and to support and promote its values.

16)Assist the area as required in the event of a major incident.

17)To undertake any other duties as requested by your Line Manager.

Special Requirements

/ Essential car user with own car and must have a clean driving licence**.
Able to respond to emergency situations.
Occasionally able to work and travel throughout the Area as required.
